"For the record, I visited the reading of two female poets from Spain, a program called, "Redefining a Female Poetics". Can you explain what that means? I took off my hat, my blue baseball cap with the orange block S. I was immediately drawn in by the reading. First a younger woman read, ond who had endured the last economic crisis in Spain, a Sara Torres. She spoke perfect English, educated at King's College London. However, she claimed she had invented her own way of speaking Spanish for when she recited her verse. I heard the difference, so I believed in her linguistic invention. The second poet, one could just call her by her first name, Aurora. Aurora Luque. I looked her first and last name up to be sure. She spoke to the audience in Spanish, an audience mostly of language majors, so almost everyone but me undrrstood. A professor from Rochester who had translated much of her work, spoke for her in English. I loved the format. I remember long ago a poetry reading like it at the Plymouth Coffee Bean. A poet who lived in Ann Arbor came to read for us. She had won a Hopwood Award while at the University and parlayed this into a Fulbright to study in Spain. I believe her name was Diane. I can picture her in my mind's eye but cannot summon back the spelling of her last name. And I am obliged to look up her name of the list of winners kept by the Hopwood Room staff. Diane read through a book of poems written by Neruda in English, poem by poem. A man named Vance read the translation in English, Vance who wrote long confessional poems and kept bunnies as house pets. Spanish poetry published in the United States has long been published in a side by side format, English on the left, Spanish right. I let the students ask the questions last night as the evening had been organized for their education. I held back because I have gratitude that college events such as this are open to the public. Maybe now I have topics for lunch room chats with the programmers from Cuba and the Dominica Republic. Sadly, I left my hat in the lounge where the reading was held. Hardly worth going back for it. And my haircut has a pleasing effect upon my appearance. I can buy a replacement soon at Kinney Drugs for twenty bucks."
