The Butler County Humane Society (BCHS) is a dedicated, non-profit organization committed to providing a temporary, safe, no-kill shelter for homeless, unwanted, and abandoned cats and dogs. Located in Renfrew, Pennsylvania, BCHS is a beacon of hope for animals in need, offering them food, shelter, veterinary care, and enrichment while they await their forever homes.
At BCHS, we believe in the humane treatment of all animals and work tirelessly to increase community awareness through education, spay-neuter programs, rabies clinics, and promoting a respect for life. Our mission is not just about finding homes for animals, but also about fostering a compassionate community that values and protects its most vulnerable members.
We rely heavily on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and foundations to fund our vital programs, supplies, and operational expenses. Your donations directly impact the lives of countless pets, helping us to provide the care and resources necessary for their well-being and future happiness.
BCHS is always looking for dedicated volunteers and foster families to join our efforts. By partnering with us, you can make a significant difference in the lives of homeless and displaced pets. Whether you’re interested in hands-on animal care, assisting with events, or providing a temporary home for animals in need, there are numerous ways to get involved.
We host a variety of engaging events throughout the year, from the elegant Fur Balls to the delightful Wine & Whiskers. These events not only raise essential funds but also bring our community together to celebrate and support our mission. Don’t miss out on these exciting opportunities—join our mailing list to stay updated on upcoming events, news, and other ways to support BCHS.
Each year, hundreds of pets find brighter futures through BCHS. We cherish the heartwarming stories of these happy tails, shared by the pets themselves and their loving families. These success stories are a testament to the impact of our work and the generosity of our supporters.
As a private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization, BCHS is not affiliated with any other local, state, or national humane groups. This independence allows us to focus entirely on the needs of our local community. Your gift saves pets within our community and helps us continue our life-saving work.

"Tried to adopt a puppy from here. We met the pup and had a great connection. We answered more questions in person after filling out an exhaustive list of questions on the application. Told it would be a few days to hear if we were approved for adoption, but it took almost 2 weeks. Finally got someone on the phone and they told us we were denied the adoption and when I asked why, they told me "for several reasons" that they wouldn't disclose when I point blank asked why we were denied. Places like this are why people go to breeders instead of shelters. If you're not kid free, in a home with a fully fenced yard, have meticulous vet records, and meet their personal standards, don't even bother trying to adopt from here."
"It is recommended that you schedule an appointment before stopping in to visit an animal. I did not know this at the time. But we were able to visit the dog we wanted and ultimately ended up adopting him. I appreciate them providing his medical records as well as papers with instructions to help get him settled into the new home. They sent out emails containing various resources. I'm also thankful they scheduled an in home visit to teach us what our pup knows. Remember to adopt before you shop! ❤️"
"We got our Envigo Beagle here, Sept 2022! The staff is amazing and the facility is very clean! We brought our Valor back for his 1 year reunion, and they loved seeing him! Please donate to their cause if you can!"
