Reviews of Short Beach Town Park
"This review is for trails of the park rather than beach experience focus. There is surprising variety of pines along few sandy trails and these are not typical pitch pines of Pine Barrens. Also it is not similar to typical maritime forests of Fire Island or New Jersey. Looks like township’s parks department did a good job here. Greenery in mid-winter was much appreciated along with expansive water views of Long Island Sound and Nissequogue river. Beware that park is for residents only and it is enforced in warmer months."
"Beautiful beach. Great for walks and watching the sunset."
"Great place to take the kids to a small beach great concession stand clean clean clean bathrooms close to home if you live in Smithtown or St. james that’s where I live. Easy to get to."
"Great spot for sunsets ❤ very rocky but calm relaxing beach. There is a playground for kids and an area for campers."
"The addition of a plastic ramp leading closer to the water is a Godsend! I have limited mobility, & walking on the sand all the way down to the water was previously an enormous task. I use a cane for assistance, and this allows me to get closer to the water with less effort. Before it's installation, I was limited to either the sprinkler park, or the end of the cement walkway that only goes a short way to the water. This is similar to one used in FL, at my timeshare, and I was so happy to see it. This also allows easier access to the concession stand and the restroom as well. Kudos to Smithtown Parks Dept. for adding it. The only thing you need to be aware of when coming here is the tide table. At low tide, this is sometimes the "waterless beach". It's also a good way to introduce young children to the "ocean" as there are little or no waves, and plenty of Marine life. I do urge the town to post better signage regarding Horseshoe Crabs. These are now considered endangered, and too many parents are unaware that it's illegal to interfere with them in any way, especially during mating season (mid-late June). They need to be reminded that these are prehistoric creatures who's numbers are dwindling, due to their use as bait. I see too many people, adults as well as children, separating mating adults and otherwise manhandling them. The beach itself, like all North shore beaches is very rocky, and the use of watershoes is advised. There's also a small playground up near the parking area with some swings and other kiddie rides."
