About the Business
Welcome to Ellis Hollow Nature Preserve, a serene oasis nestled at 313 Ellis Hollow Creek Road, Ithaca, New York. This enchanting park and tourist attraction offers an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of fern-carpeted forests and discover the captivating beauty of nature across all seasons.
Upon arrival, the initial stretch of trail may seem unassuming, running through a power line right-of-way. However, just a short 500 feet in, you'll find yourself surrounded by a majestic forest of towering oaks, maples, hickories, and more. Located on the northern hillside of the Ellis Hollow valley, streams flowing through the preserve contribute significantly to the water quality of Cascadilla Creek and nearby wetlands.
Explore a series of nested loop trails starting from an informational kiosk. Choose the left path to meander along a stream under the canopy of eastern hemlocks, or opt for the right path to traverse a mixed hardwood forest on a terraced hillside. Waterproof hiking boots are recommended for the multiple stream crossings along the way.
Ellis Hollow Nature Preserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with spring and summer bringing the melodic songs of various bird species. In spring, the forest floor bursts into a vibrant display of ferns and wildflowers, including the unique cucumber trees—our region's only native magnolia.
Please remember to keep dogs leashed and respect the preserve's rules, including the private six-acre in-holding that is not open to the public. This precious land was generously donated by Barbara Keeton and her family in 2000, ensuring its preservation for wildlife and peaceful public enjoyment.
In addition to the main preserve, the 39-acre Pearman Woods tract, acquired in 2009, extends the protected lands of Ellis Hollow. While there are currently no marked trails, an informal path is maintained by dedicated volunteers.
The Finger Lakes Land Trust, which manages the preserve, acknowledges the land's significance to the Haudenosaunee people and is committed to conserving these wild spaces. We invite you to explore the Finger Lakes region through Go Finger Lakes, a free resource featuring over 50 outdoor adventure destinations.
To visit Ellis Hollow Nature Preserve, follow Ellis Hollow Road from Ithaca, turn left on Genung Road, and then right on Ellis Hollow Creek Road. The entrance is conveniently located just 0.2 miles past the intersection on the left.

"Nice little area for a hike. The longest of the three trails is just about 1.5 km, and it's very possible to hike all of them in an hour or so. Leashed dogs are welcome; don't forget to clean up!"
"Beautiful, peaceful and well marked trails!"
"A nice 20 to 45 minute round trip hike, moderately hilly, through forest and stream. No grand vistas. Some child friendly markers along the way. Duration depends on options you choose along the way."
"Lovely wooded pocket park in an area blessed with many other spectacular and larger parks. A great short hike with my dog. Just a mile or so east of the Cornell campus."
