"Absolutely ridiculous that a day pass is $41. There is no way that anyone would come to use every single amenity offered. If someone’s going to workout it would be for a max of 2 hours and that’s still not worth anywhere near $41. My girlfriend and I wanted to play 2 games of indoor pickleball on a rainy day, sucks to be us I guess. $41 is crazy for an hour."
"I've been a member for a couple of years. It is one of the best-run health clubs I have ever used. It has excellent facilities and professional staff. It is a bit more expensive than some other options in the area, but you get what you pay for."
"Best gym in Michigan! The customer service is great. The members here are always friendly and kind. The amenities are amazing. I love the dry sauna, steam room, hot tub, and cold plunge. It would be nice if they stayed open later at night. It would also be great if they added massage chairs, tanning beds, hydrogen water, and hyperbaric chambers."
"I have been a member of the Michigan Athletic Club for approximately 3 years. Even though I am leaving a 1 star review here, I will be coming back because, unfortunately, there is no facility in the Lansing area that matches the size of the MAC. And this is at the heart of the 1 star review I am leaving. Because the MAC has no competition in the area and is effectively a monopoly, I believe they have no incentive to make the MAC a truly excellent 5 star premium gym facility. Here are the PROS and CONS: PROS - Large facility with a decent layout. - Friendly enough staff. - Marginal improvements of the cleanliness of equipment since the end of the Covid pandemic. The exercise machines used to be covered in disgusting dried sweat goop, but they are doing a better job of cleaning it off. CONS - Firstly, the most frustrating thing is that there are so many areas that need to be repaired & updated. Instead the gym spent BIG bucks putting in a new Starbucks!? So instead of having new gym equipment and working hot tubs, they put in a Starbucks instead. Very Bizarre. - This is basically a facility in terminal decline. They are making some modest improvements in certain areas, but the basic amenities & equipment that members rely on are often broken and unusable. Here are some main examples: They have 1 small working steam room that gets hot, while their bigger steam room is a joke and doesn't get hot at all (the excuse given for this is that it's a local health code violation to have the steam room get too hot, which makes no sense because the 2nd steam room gets super hot.) The hot tub and cold plunge pool in Mens Locker Room 1 has been broken and shut down for almost 3 years. They have 1 decent rowing machine in the entire facility that everyone is trying to use and makes people angry. (I have told the staff about this many many times and they have done nothing to fix it.) The dry saunas do not get hot at all. - Because half of the amenities are broken down, the ones that are left are extremely busy. - There have been marginal improvements in the overall cleanliness of the facility, but there are many areas that are still neglected. Floors are usually filthy and the shared lockers never get cleaned. OVERALL I feel sad about this place because as much as I want to love it, there are some frustrating drawbacks to this facility. You pay a premium price for a facility that is no longer in it's prime and is steadily on the decline. I get the feeling that this business is struggling and therefore cannot plug all the holes of a slowly sinking ship. Hopefully someday they fix these issues or a new facility is built somewhere in the Lansing area that I can switch to. I know that The University of Michigan merged with Sparrow so hopefully they can put some much needed investments back into the club to get everything working properly."
"Sparrow employee here. We quit using the MAC a few years ago because we didn’t like the service we got. The swim lessons had really gone down hill in quality and my kid was getting more meaningful instruction at our local community center for 1/8th the price. With that said, now my son is a good swimmer and we were thinking about reinstating our membership. Employees used to get a discount and it was $165 per month for an employee plus their family. I called today to verify the price. It is now $105 for employees plus $65 for the spouse and an additional $30 for each child per month. That’s insane and laughable. So, I find this confusing. We hear about how the MAC has been losing money. Well, to make money, you would likely want to be increase memberships and lower the price. Unless, they are fine with taking a loss because they want to keep the club ultimately exclusive to doctors and their families, thus making it unaffordable to all the other employees. This is what they did with the daycare sparrow owned, way back when. I hope U of M gets in the door and brings more of a community service and profitability mindset to fix this problem soon. Sparrow is in horrible financial situation because the higher ups have never known how to make a profit. It starts with providing good customer service and pricing out 75% of the possible customer base is never good for business."
