"Sonny's is the best bagel place in SOMa/MapSO. The bagels are fresh, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The staff at Sonny's is wonderful. They greet you with a smile and assist you quickly. For those of you not familiar with Sonny's process, one person helps you through your order from start to finish. It may come off as confusing or like they are ignoring customers. That's not the case. If employee A is helping you, they take your order, prepare it and ring you up. It's the Sonny's way. PS: Some A/C for the staff would be a great addition."
"I went by Sonny’s today to get a bagel which I love their salt bagels and the young ladies there need more customer service training. They don’t speak when you enter the store. I was waiting in front of the register to pick up my bagel and the cashier never acknowledged me, she proceeded to service the customer behind me. I ask if we’re invisible and she said no, but never asked what I needed. Another young lady came over and I gave her my name. Now, I was excited for my bagel but I looked in the bag and my bagel was not how I order it. I took it back into the store, upon entering no one acknowledged me. They did look at me but never acknowledged my existence. I said excuse me to one young lady and proceeded to tell her my issue with the order, she said ok, and called someone else to help me. Granted she was making orders. After my order was remade I was standing in front of the counter awaiting to give a tip to the young lady who so graciously help me, another worker proceeded to serve a customer behind me passing his food around me. Maybe it was a rough day for the store but I will take my money elsewhere. Manage may need to address customer service issues with a few of the front line workers."
"A true cultural institution for the little South Orange village. The bagels here are made in-house behind the counter and they are divine. My Dad insists we stop at Sonny’s first thing every time we visit. The owner, Jason, is the kindest shop owner in NJ. He always has a sticker for the kids, and he’ll explain the process of boiling and baking the bread for them anytime."
"Came in from out of town for a family event and they recommended we stop here for bagels to take home. The bagels were fresh and chewy. The owner was friendly and seemed to love owning his own bagel shop. A recent review saying that they wish this place had ham sandwiches is silly. An old school bagel shop would NEVER have ham. I’m thrilled that this bagel shop seems to be kosher style."
"I grew up in NY and continue to be in the city 3-4 days/week. I've been in search of a NYC bagel place which can rival the taste and consistency of Sonny's bagels and I haven't found it so far, and many of my city friends agree. Add to this, the staff are uniformly friendly and helpful. Hands down the best bagel shop around."
