"This marker is in front of the Lakeside Cemetery in Erie. There is room to pull to the side and you can of course tour the cemetery. The marker reads, "Grave of Captain Gridley, commander of Dewey's flagship Olympia in the Battle of Manila Bay, 1898, is located in this cemetery. Dewey's order, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley," opened the battle." It was erected in 1946 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission."
