North & South Shenango Joint Municipal Authority

The North & South Shenango Joint Municipal Authority (N.S.S.J.M.A.) is a dedicated local government office serving the communities of North and South Shenango Townships in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Situated along the eastern boundary of Pymatuning Lake, the Authority is responsible for the ownership and operation of a comprehensive sanitary sewer collection system and an advanced wastewater treatment plant.

Services Provided:

N.S.S.J.M.A. ensures the efficient collection and treatment of wastewater through a meticulously designed system comprising:

- Collection System:

- 55 miles of 8-inch diameter vitrified clay collection sewer

- 12 miles of 8-inch polyvinyl chloride (PVC) collector sewer

- 7 miles of vitrified clay interceptor sewer ranging from 12 to 18 inches in diameter

- 17 collector pumping stations strategically located to elevate and transport wastewater from collector lines to interceptor sewers

- Interceptor System:

- 6 interceptor pumping stations positioned adjacent to the interceptor sewer, responsible for transferring the majority of collected flow to the treatment facility

Treatment Facility:

The state-of-the-art treatment plant operates three concurrent treatment units, ensuring uninterrupted service and maintenance flexibility. The facility includes:

- A single Sequencing Batch Reactor

- Two oxidation-nitrification treatment units

- A treatment capacity of 1.7 million gallons per day (MGD) as per NPDES Permit #PA0100277 and Water Quality Management Permit #2075402

- Phosphorus reduction through the addition of Ferrous Chloride

- Effluent disinfection using sodium hypochlorite before discharge into the Shenango River
