Westerdahl Park - A Community Gem in Erie, PA
Located at 663 West 4th Street, Erie, PA 16507, Westerdahl Park is a newly established "pocket" park that symbolizes the spirit of renewal and community involvement in the West Bayfront neighborhood. Named in honor of the corner store that once stood on this lot, the park is a tribute to the area's rich history and a beacon of hope for its future.
The park's opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 31st, organized by Our West Bayfront. This event marked the transformation of a previously blighted property into a vibrant community space, thanks to the collective efforts of dozens of local residents.
The construction of Westerdahl Park was expertly overseen by Dahlkemper Landscape Architects and Contractors, following a thoughtful design by David Brennan of Bostwick Design Partnership. The design process was highly collaborative, incorporating valuable input from neighborhood residents to ensure the park met the community's needs and aspirations.
A significant portion of the park's construction was carried out by Team Oak 11 of the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). This dedicated group of young adults from across the United States spent July and August working on various community projects in both the West and East Bayfront neighborhoods. Their hard work and dedication were instrumental in bringing Westerdahl Park to life, leaving a lasting positive impact on the community.
The development of Westerdahl Park was made possible through generous grants from Environment Erie and the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority. These funds were crucial in supporting the park's construction and ensuring it could become a welcoming and green space for all to enjoy.
Westerdahl Park stands as a testament to what can be achieved through community collaboration, thoughtful design, and dedicated effort. It is not just a park, but a symbol of neighborhood pride and a step forward in the ongoing revitalization of the West Bayfront area. Whether you're looking for a peaceful place to relax, a spot to connect with neighbors, or a piece of local history, Westerdahl Park offers it all.
