The Knox Mansion: A Historic Gem in Buffalo, NY
Located at 800 Delaware Ave, Buffalo, NY 14209, The Knox Mansion is a stunning example of French Renaissance architecture with a rich history that dates back to its construction in 1915. Designed by the esteemed architect Charles Pierrepont Gilbert, who was known for his work on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, the mansion was completed in 1918 at a staggering cost of $600,000—equivalent to about $13.4 million today.
Originally built for Seymour H. Knox, co-founder of the Woolworth and Knox department stores (later known as Woolworth’s), the mansion boasts 25 lavish rooms, excluding kitchens, pantries, bathrooms, maintenance quarters, and cloakrooms. Unfortunately, Mr. Knox passed away on the eve of the mansion's construction and never had the chance to live in his opulent home. His family, including his widow Grace Knox, son Seymour H. Jr., and daughters Marjorie and Dorothy, later occupied the residence. Seymour H. Knox, Jr.'s sons, Northrup and Seymour H. III, went on to co-own the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.
In 1969, the private Montefiore Club acquired the mansion and added athletic facilities, including a gymnasium, squash courts, and a locker room with shower facilities. Nearly a decade later, in 1978, the mansion was purchased by Computer Task Group (CTG) for $1.3 million to serve as its corporate headquarters. CTG remained there until 2021, when Ross Cellino of Cellino Law, one of New York's largest personal injury firms, acquired the building to establish his new corporate headquarters.
We are thrilled to announce that The Knox Mansion is now open to the public for free tours, offering a unique glimpse into Buffalo's storied past. Tours are available on weekends, either Saturday or Sunday, at 10:00 AM and last approximately an hour and a half. Please note that the tour includes several stairwells and is not recommended for children 12 and under.

"WOW!… This was an amazing tour and a history lesson well worth the trip to see the Knox Mansion. The place is historical and full of nostalgia. Our personal tour guide - Mr. Cellino (brother of Mr. Ross Cellino) was just full of knowledge which he shared with the group. I highly recommend taking this tour and you will appreciate having spent the time learning about some of our past with some very influential people that did good things to give back to the people. This story should be made into a movie and filmed on location. Thank you for the experience and the wonderful tour!~"
