About Us

Experience the warmth and charm of life as it was lived by a small-town doctor at the Kerr Museum. Nestled in the quaint town of Oakmont, just outside of Pittsburgh, this museum offers a unique glimpse into middle-class family life in the late nineteenth century. The home of Dr. Thomas R. Kerr, his wife Jessie, and their daughter Virginia provides a captivating escape from the often harsh conditions of city life during that era.
The Kerr Museum is renowned for its extraordinary collection of vintage fashion, spanning from the late 1800s to the Roaring 1920s. Donated by the prominent Brown family, this collection showcases high society fashion and includes exquisite pieces worn by Margaret Boyle Brown of Pittsburgh, a famous socialite and the wife of wealthy industrialist W. H. Brown. Visitors will marvel at the elegance of outfits such as a black and silver ball gown and a beaded salmon-colored flapper dress.

"My sister-in-law and I visited here today. We were the only two on the tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a history of the house and the Kerr family. They were also having a special exhibit of period clothing provided by The Brown family. They also have Halloween and Christmas decorated tours. Highly recommend this tour, BUT as they are by appointment only, you need to call ahead to plan your tour."
"I have been to the Kerr House numerous times and each visit is better than the last! I went to the Halloween Tour last night which was outstanding in every way. The passion and attention to historical detail in the victorian era is exceptional. The volunteers who create/conduct the events clearly know what they are doing and they are doing it in the best way possible. I highly recommend supporting this treasure in the community."
"From the very beginning, to the last word expressed, our guide Jane, was very knowledgeable and extremely interesting."
"Great place to visit for an authentic trip back to the 19th century. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and had lots of interesting facts. Recommended for anyone with an interest in history."
"If you are a history buff and would like to see a historic house this would be the place in Pittsburgh. I watch and learn a lot about history, however, I was pleased by the knowledge of the tour guide and her knowledge of the 19th century and the customs of the times. The house is decorated and dressed as it would have been at the time the pictures furniture and all of the dressings. I was and always am impressed when I go back to the house and this year we are going to the Christmas candle light tour. The house is going to be prepared and ready for the holidays I can't wait I have been told how the house is decorated and prepared for show during the hilodays. If you ever want to feel like you are in the 19th century for an hour or so this is the place for you. The house is in a quaint city called Oakmont and they value the historic properties and feel. This house is a place to visit and this city is a place to live. When you stop I hope to meet you and I hope you share the experience."
