Our Story:
The journey of La Gourmandine began with a love for baking and a dream of bringing traditional French pastries to Pittsburgh. Fabien and Lisanne, the heart and soul behind La Gourmandine, both grew up in families where sharing a meal was a cherished tradition. Fabien fondly recalls, “there was always a bottle of wine and some fresh bread on the table and it hasn’t changed!”
Fabien, who studied at the prestigious Lenôtre Culinary Institute in Paris, moved to Pittsburgh with Lisanne to pursue their dream. Despite the language barrier, Fabien gained valuable experience working as a line cook in some of the city's finest restaurants. In June 2010, La Gourmandine bakery and pastry shop opened its doors in Lawrenceville. The success of their first shop led to the opening of a second location in Mt. Lebanon in October 2014. By 2017, they had centralized production in Hazelwood, complete with a storefront. The latest addition to their growing business is a cozy café in Downtown Pittsburgh, featuring a full espresso bar.

"delightful spot for anyone craving authentic French pastries. Their croissants, éclairs, and macarons are simply divine, and you can truly taste the quality and craftsmanship in every bite. The ambiance of the shop is charming and makes you feel like you're in a quaint Parisian café. However, the dining-in experience leaves a bit to be desired. The seating area is limited and can get quite crowded during peak hours. Additionally, the coffee beverages are limited and don't quite match the excellence of the pastries. If they could offer more of coffee offerings and expand their dining space, this place would be perfect. Despite these minor drawbacks, it's still a must-visit for pastry lovers!"
"If you’re looking for classic french pastries, this is your spot! This location didn’t have eat in seating but I see others do."
"My favorite bakery in Pittsburgh I go here for cakes for any special occasion. The almond croissant here is a must try the lions can get somewhat long maybe like 5 to 10 minute wait but it’s definitely worth going."
"When we visit Pittsburgh we've passed this place many times in Lawrenceville, usually with a line out the door. When visiting a local must see (the abbey) they recommended giving them a try. On our most recent visit, we did! The line wasn't out the door but there were people inside and more that came in while we were there. The menu is rotating which is good and bad, we had wanted to try a pistachio horn but they didn't have it this time. We did get a vast selection of many other things. Everything was fresh, Delicious and very fairly priced. I haven't been to France so I can't speak to their authenticity but it was exactly what I hoped for and we will absolutely be back. Staff are patient and helpful, food is appealing and they offer sandwiches with their fresh breads as well as desserts and pastry. Try them!"
"About the French Bakery: This French bakery, situated on Butler Street, provided a rather quiet atmosphere during my visit. It seemed to be the end of their shift, resulting in a limited selection of items. About the Experience: We tried their croissant and some bread danish, but neither were particularly exciting; they were just okay. The limited variety and the lack of excitement in the pastries left me uncertain about returning for another visit. While the location and the quiet ambiance were positive aspects, the limited items and the underwhelming pastries make me hesitant to give this bakery a higher rating. A three-star review feels appropriate given the overall experience."
