About the Business
Welcome to the Elephant Exhibit at the North Carolina Zoo, where you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of African elephants. Located in the heart of Asheboro, NC, our spacious 40-acre habitat is home to large herds of elephants, rhinos, antelope, and gazelles, offering a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in a naturalistic setting.
What You'll Experience:
- Learn About African Elephants: Did you know that elephant babies can weigh over 200 pounds at birth? Discover more intriguing facts about these gentle giants and their complex social structures.
- Building Trust Through Training: Our dedicated keepers use positive reinforcement training techniques to build trust with the elephants. This allows them to provide essential physical, mental, and emotional care, including foot care, treating minor wounds, and even administering eye drops. This strong bond helps the elephants navigate changes, such as meeting new herd mates and adjusting to habitat modifications.
- Conservation Efforts: Since 1998, the North Carolina Zoo has been actively involved in elephant conservation in West Africa. We use satellite tracking collars to monitor elephant movements, mitigate human-elephant conflicts, and delineate new protected areas. Our ongoing research projects and anti-poaching strategies are crucial in protecting Nigeria’s last elephant population and ensuring the well-being of elephants across the region.
- Interactive and Educational Programs: Join us for engaging programs like "elephant yoga," designed to keep our elephants strong and healthy while providing a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
- A Natural Haven: The exhibit's expansive grassy area allows the animals to graze freely, closely mimicking their natural environment. This not only promotes their physical health but also enhances their overall well-being.
Conservation in Action:
The North Carolina Zoo is deeply committed to protecting wild elephants from poaching and conflicts with local farmers in West Africa. By utilizing advanced technologies and innovative strategies, we strive to create a safer world for these majestic animals.

"We loved seeing the elephants! Everything was so well maintained. The people who work here are so kind and helpful!"
"11-13-22 Part of the Watani Grasslands Reserve on the African side. VERY large habitat and very appropriate for these animals. Several viewing areas throughout and that helps with covering the entire area to get a glimpse. There are binoculars (25 cents) for viewing but I always bring my own and would recommend doing this. Personal binoculars just do a better job. As of today, there were six female elephants in the exhibit. Signage detailing these ladies are in the viewing areas. The elephants' size and beauty are probably understated and I would bet this is one of the most popular stops in the zoo."
"Loved this zoo a lot. Best zoo I have ever visited. There is a s plenty of area for animals it’s as good as they are in wild. This is the largest natural habitat zoo in the world and this is one of the reason it will make you walk a lot and may exhaust you. Use their internal tram and shuttle. Also book for the zoofari as soon as you enter the zoo, as they will be sold out pretty early in the day. There is no advance booking and is available only certain days in week. Check the website for more details. Best place for kids. Lot of animals"
"These majestic giants are so beautiful. Great views from several locations."
