UPMC Diabetes Center - UPMC McKeesport Lions Diabetes Center
About the Business
UPMC Diabetes Center, located at UPMC McKeesport Lions Diabetes Center, is dedicated to providing exceptional diabetes care and support. Understanding that effective diabetes management is crucial to maintaining overall health, our team of expert endocrinologists employs the latest techniques, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pump therapy, to help you stay on top of your condition.
Our comprehensive services cover everything from initial diagnosis to ongoing diabetes management. At UPMC, we recognize that diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, which can result from the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body’s inability to use insulin effectively. To address this, we offer not only medical treatment but also diabetes education and support programs.
We are nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) for our diabetes self-management education. Our skilled diabetes educators and dietitians provide personalized guidance to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge tailored to your unique needs. In collaboration with your primary care physician (PCP) and endocrine doctor, we work towards helping you achieve good control over your diabetes.
Maintaining blood sugar levels within the target range—70 to 130 mg/dl before meals and no higher than 180 mg/dl after meals—can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. Regular monitoring through the A1C test, which measures average blood glucose levels over the past three months, is essential. For most people with diabetes (PWD), the goal is to keep A1C levels below 7%, though individual targets may vary.
Our UPMC care team will create a personalized management plan for you, which includes dietary advice and physical activity recommendations. A healthy diet and regular exercise can greatly improve blood glucose control, aid in weight loss, and enhance overall well-being. Even simple activities like daily walks can be beneficial, but always consult your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.
In addition to lifestyle adjustments, diabetes management often involves the use of medications, including insulin and non-insulin agents. Keeping track of glucose readings is crucial to understanding how various factors like physical activity, food, medicine, and stress impact your blood sugar levels.
We acknowledge that managing a chronic condition like diabetes can be challenging and stressful. Our dedicated team is here to support you every step of the way, providing the necessary expertise and encouragement to help you manage your diabetes effectively.
