Welcome to Apthorp Farms Inc. - Reindeer
At Apthorp Farms, we embrace the Hawaiian concept of "Kahu," which means guardian, protector, steward, and beloved attendant. This philosophy reflects our deep love and respect for our reindeer, Doberman, and all our animals, both past and present. We do not see ourselves as owners but as caretakers entrusted with the safe keeping of these precious beings, who are cherished parts of our souls.
Founded in 2012 by volunteer firefighters and paramedics Scott and Deb Apthorp, Apthorp Farms is the realization of Deb's childhood dream of owning a reindeer farm. Our farm is operated and staffed by dedicated first responders who are committed to serving the community. Our mission is to provide exceptional service to our clients and ensure the well-being of our reindeer.
We have a strong focus on education and maintaining the health and happiness of our reindeer. Since our inception, we have been actively involved in various charitable activities, including virtual events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the organizations we have supported include The Pennsylvania State Police, Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, E.A.R.S. Rabbit Rescue, St. Martins Early Learning Center, Pediatria, The U.S. Brig Niagara, Erie Fire Department, Fairfield Hose Company, Collier PD, MARS Stem Club, Tamarack Wildlife, and the A.N.N.A shelter, among others. We welcome charity requests via email or phone.
In 2013, we added a historical piece to our farm—the Boston Store Santa Chair, originally from the Erie Dry Goods store built in 1885. This chair, a nostalgic symbol for many Erie County children, was purchased from Santa Vern Johnson, who wanted it to be preserved in a special place. We have restored the chair to its original glory and plan to display it prominently in our barn once we have the necessary funds. Our goal is to keep the chair's history alive and possibly place it in a local museum in the future.
Additionally, we have preserved a beautiful porch lamp from a historic farmhouse at 9091 Peach St, built in 1851. The lamp, which once belonged to Mr. Dennis, a beloved Harboreek School teacher and Pearl Harbor veteran, now adorns the entrance to our Santa house. We hope that Mr. Dennis looks fondly upon this piece of his home that we have preserved with care and respect.
Come visit Apthorp Farms and meet our beloved reindeer and other family members. Experience firsthand why we consider ourselves their Kahu. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our passion for these wonderful animals and our community.
