The inspiration behind La Gourmandine is rooted in a deep love for baking and a desire to bring the authentic French bakery experience to Pittsburgh. Fabien and Lisanne, the founders, both cherish the tradition of family meals, a time-honored custom in their French countryside homes. As Fabien fondly recalls, “there was always a bottle of wine and some fresh bread on the table and it hasn’t changed!”
Lisanne has a special connection to Pittsburgh, having visited the Steel City since she was a baby to see her grandparents, family, and friends. It was only natural that when she moved to the United States, Pittsburgh became her home. Fabien, after following his wife to the city, embarked on his culinary journey despite not knowing English at the time. He honed his skills in some of Pittsburgh’s finest restaurants and studied at the prestigious Lenôtre Culinary Institute in Paris, mastering the art of baking.
La Gourmandine first opened its doors in Lawrenceville in June 2010. Success led to the opening of a second shop in Mt. Lebanon in October 2014, and in 2017, they centralized production in Hazelwood, which also features a storefront. The latest addition to their growing enterprise is the downtown café, offering a full espresso bar for the perfect Parisian experience.
Come and visit La Gourmandine, where every bite is a journey to France.

"Every pastry looks phenomenal and it is hard to choose! I had the lemon pie which was sweet, sour, creamy and flaky all at once. Looks like their food menu is great as well. Nice staff"
"Came for breakfast, and arrived to find a long queue, which is a great sign and raised my expectations. However, maybe my expectations were a bit too high. Ordered a dine-in order of a slice of quiche (requested heated), a small cappuccino, and an almond croissant. And yes, the croissant was as flat as all the reviews claimed -- I daresay they should rebrand it as a croffle instead. Even though I was dining in, the quiche and cappuccino were in carry-out containers, which is a bit wasteful. The quiche was ice cold but flavorful and had a nice, light egg texture (oh, how I detest when there's rubbery, tough eggs!!). The cappuccino was weak, and tepid as the service. But the almond croissant/croffle actually tasted pretty good! Great crisp, lovely almond flavor that was not too sickly overpowering as they tend to be, and was a delight to eat from start to finish! All in all, it's aite but not seeing what the hype is. Maybe come with lower expectations."
"There are many bread and dessert options, the ambiance is adorable, and the staff is very friendly. I'm attending a conference in Pittsburgh for the first time these few days, and I'm so grateful to be able to find such delicious bread within walking distance."
"I went on a weekday around 3 PM, and it was pretty empty. Their closing time is 5 PM, so it was pretty close to the closing time. The space is large with plenty of seating, however it’s all rather plain looking. But I wasn’t here for the decor, so I didn’t mind. I I ordered the iced latte in a large size and was informed that their iced drinks only comes in a medium size. That was not a problem for me, and the barista was really sweet and nice. The latte was very good. as to the food, there were limited options because I guess they had run out of most of the stuff by 3 PM, and the shelves were also pretty empty. I ordered the almond croissant, which is unlike your typical almond croissant. The croissant was smashed down to give rise to a flat and thin croissant and it was crispy at both the top and bottom. Of course, it was not flaky anymore because it was smashed, but I quite liked the texture. There was your typical almond filling and shaved almonds on top. I suspect that maybe the bottom of the croissant was soaked in syrup because it was pretty sweet, but I can’t be sure. I would probably come back sometime in the morning so that I can try a variety of other pastries that they are known for. Overall, it was a very good experience, but it was definitely nothing out of the world."
"This is the best French bakery I’ve been to. I went there towards the end of my trip and wish I had gone earlier so I could’ve gone more often. We got the marquis cake, a plain croissant, and little flaky balls with cream in it. It was all so good. The croissant was so flaky with a delicious buttery flavor. The marquis cake was good but I’ve had better mousse cakes. I don’t know how the flaky balls were because my toddler ate it all before I could have a bite. Before we left, I got the cream puff and a chocolate croissant to go. All very yummy."
