About Us

The Juneau Shotokan Karate Club, located at 9447 La Perouse Avenue in Juneau, Alaska, is a traditional Japanese karate institution that focuses on self-defense through teaching blocking, striking, punching, kicking, throwing, and joint locks. Led by Sensei Doug Murray, the club meets three times a week to train in basic moves, kata, kumite, and self-defense. Affiliated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), the club follows the high standards and principles set by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Students are accepted at any time during the month and are taught the basics before joining regular classes. The club is part of the Alaska Region Shotokan group, providing access to regional competitions, camps, and extended training opportunities. The club offers various camps and competitions, including the annual National Competition hosted by the ISKF. With a focus on character, sincerity, effort, etiquette, and self-control, the Juneau Shotokan Karate Club is a welcoming community of dedicated individuals who strive for personal growth through consistent training.
