The Narrows Bottom Up, Hurricane, Utah 84737
About the Business
The Narrows is a popular park located in Hurricane, Utah, United States, known for its unique hiking experience through the Virgin River. Unlike most hikes, visitors must travel upstream through uneven, slippery, and rocky river boulders. Proper preparation is crucial for safety and enjoyment, including wearing closed-toed shoes, non-cotton clothing, and bringing a walking stick. Flash floods are a potential hazard, so it is important to check with park rangers for current conditions before embarking on the hike.
The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, with walls towering a thousand feet tall and the river just twenty to thirty feet wide. Visitors can hike along the Riverside Walk for a mile from the Temple of Sinawava to see The Narrows, or wade upstream in the Virgin River for a more immersive experience. Permits are required for a through-hike from Chamberlain's Ranch to the Temple of Sinawava.
Water levels in The Narrows can vary greatly depending on factors like rainfall and snowmelt, affecting the difficulty of the hike. The park recommends checking the weather forecast and flash flood potential before starting any trip in the canyon. Close-toed shoes, synthetic layers, and a hiking stick are recommended for hiking in The Narrows.
For more information and to check current conditions, visitors can contact the Zion National Park visitor center. Remember to follow park regulations and guidelines to protect the park and ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience in The Narrows.

"Amazing hike. I didn’t know if I could do it after a recent knee injury. I’m so glad I powered through. We didn’t bring any special equipment and had a great time. There are walking sticks at the start of the hike, which came in handy along the way. Make sure to get here early to avoid the crowds."
"Did 10 miles total in December 2023 with my daughter. It was a truly beautiful hike! We used the outfitter right by the park visitor center. Roughly 55 bucks per person for poles, boots and the pant things. Everything stays dry but your feet. 35 degrees out and yet we were super comfy the whole time. Great experience great hike! Been to Zion at all times of the year but never in December. Really glad we chose to come back this time of the year! Deepest part was about mid-chest level for like 20 feet about 15 to 20 minutes into the hike. After that it was super easy. Take your time and be safe!"
"A must if in Zion National park. So unique. We rented our waders, boots and stick from Zion Outfitters at the entrance to Zion. The water is cold even in the summer but many people braved the cool water without gear. Highly recommend if you are in the area. Beautiful views of the canyon walls as you hike through the river. Plenty of spots along the hike that are on the banks but lots of river crossings or trudging through it."
"Awesome hike!!! Make sure you rent the equipment from the visitor center before going. The pants are a must but the boots are weird... The boots seem to retain water and so you might be better off with your own water shoes or just regular hiking boots, in my opinion"
"It is absolutely worth the hike from the Temple of Sinawava. Keep in mind that you will need proper hiking shoes to do the trail upstream. The water levels can differ, and at the time we visited in July, it was about 2 to 3 feet for the most part with a short stretch where it was between 4 to 5 feet high. You can check weather, trail conditions, and water levels on the parks' website as well, which is highly recommended before visiting. There are no washrooms on this trail. It took us about an hour to get to the narrows from the head of the trail (once you get into the water). Keep track of the bus schedule because if you miss it, the only way back is the long hike."
