Reviews of Downeast
"I was in this store today with my daughter and her fiance looking for outfits for their engagement pictures. The woman working there (an older woman maybe in her 50’s or 60’s) was very friendly and greeted us and said let me know if you need to try something something on! Then she said well just you (to my daughter) and then said no offense (to her fiancé) completely out of no where. Then she said “we actually get men in here that want to try women’s clothing on, and I’m sorry but I just can’t go there, it’s just too much for me.” She continued to ramble about said topic as we promptly made our way out of the store. The complete lack of awareness that this is absolutely so unbelievably discriminatory and offensive was unbelievable to me and I will never ever step one foot in one of these stores again for the rest of my life. Leave your personal beliefs at home if you choose to work in a public setting like this, and this retailer needs to pay attention and do better at screening and monitoring their hires. It makes me so incredibly sad that there are individuals looking for a way to express themselves through what they feel comfortable wearing that are met with such discrimination and shame and I genuinely hope that this review helps someone to avoid being made to feel this way and is also listened to by the ownership so that they can take a closer look at the employees that are representing their brand. Please do better."
"Always love Downeast... but as I was paying, I learned of the sale...I would have been more inclined to buy more items, had I known in advance of the discount. Having worked retail for many many years, first rule is ALWAYS talk about promotions as guests enter. So they spend more money."
"Downeast is hands down one of the best stores to get dresses. I went to two different malls trying to find a dress for my sister's wedding, and in both of them the only store I found a dress that would work was in downeast. They just have a much better selection!"
"I met my fairy godmother! She helped me find the perfect dress for my birthday dinner that night, and steamed it for me while I waited in the dressing room! She even tied my bow and helped me choose matching jewelry! Ultimate hype woman, she took photos of me when we were done!"
"Helpful staff. First of all, though, I have to just say that Downeast has a chronically peculiar color palette. Everything is always muted, dusty colors with cream, bright and off white backgrounds so everything looks old and worn out. Lots of super fleshy colors that wash out at least 50%of skin tones… I tried on about 15 dresses and walked out with 3, after the super helpful employee told me I could just return anything that didn’t work. Turns out that’s not true. She didn’t tell me the clearance dress I bought was not returnable , as I found out the next day when I went to return it. And she told me it was on sale for $19, but it was actually $29. I think she deliberately wanted to get the sales regardless of the method. I’m stuck with this dress for which I paid $10 more than I was told it would be, that I wanted to return because I decided it wasn’t the best fit or color, but couldn’t return. I did end up with one dress I like, but I will probably not ever be able to rely on downeast for future clothing needs. I’ve been sparing shopper for years, and an reminded of why whenever I go ina store. Ugly colors and at least one dishonest employee and questionable service."
