About the Business
Lake Valley Historic Townsite is a fascinating glimpse into the past, located in Hillsboro, New Mexico, United States. Founded in 1878 after the discovery of silver, this mining town quickly grew into a bustling settlement with a population of 4,000. The restored schoolhouse offers a look into rural education in the early 20th century, while other buildings have been stabilized to prevent further decay. Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour to explore the historic site and learn about its rich history. To reach Lake Valley Historic Townsite, follow NM 152 west of Caballo Lake and then south on NM 27, or travel north on NM 27 from the town of Nutt on NM 26. Don't miss this unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the legacy of this once-thriving mining town.

Reviews
"Best preserved ghost town I've ever visited. The school has been restored and features many exhibits and photos illustrating the history of the townsite."
"Unique in Ghost Towns Lake Valley does have hour of operation with a caretaker on site so plan your travel accordingly. If you combine this spot with Fort Cummings the two sites are worth the trip. The BLM has done quite a job in prestarvation the small schoolhouse museum is packed with details of the mining town. While you cannot get anywhere near the mines there is plenty to see."
"A neat place to see and dogs are allowed but I wouldn't let your dog walk around. There is broken glass literally everywhere. Neat piece of history. I would love to see some pictures of what it looked like at its peak."
"Special thanks to the BLM for restoring the school and providing literature for the walking trail. Looking forward to how the restoration effort will go with the other hallmark buildings. Very interesting to see remains of what once was a bustling mining community."
"Very pretty, well-documented ghost town with a walking tour, sign posts, and a couple of buildings that have been kept up. Even has public bathrooms - rare for a ghost town!"
