"First consult= whole paycheck! I took my three kids to this Dr., not knowing that he charges almost $1,000 for the first visit before he provides diagnosis. I also did not know that he believes in very different and aggressive treatment than any of the two Drs. we saw after him (and one prior with my first child). He referred my kids to specialists, MRIs, surgeons-appointments that were going to cost additional hundreds of dollars, uncovered by the insurance. He has a "special deal" where the MRI costs "only" $450 but does not involve your insurance. The MRI was not requested by other orthodontists, who felt that the free x-ray they provided was fine. Only one of my kids, that really has more complicated situation actually might benefit from an MRI. The other two were told (by two reputable orthodontists) that their issues were merely cosmetics, but Dr. M thought they needed extensive treatment, surgeries, and physical therapy of the tongue- all of this, again, uncovered by insurance. After paying his office almost $3,000 for the diagnosis and plan of treatment, I received a bill that informed me that I awed them $25, with a $30 late fee (for two of the kids). This was the first time I received the bill. When they called me, they only requested the $25. I am not sure what the bill was for, but at this point I just paid the $50. I chose another Dr. that saw each child twice without charging and had a fantastic staff, but any of the other two would have been great. Perhaps Dr. Macdonald is a good choice for people with severe orthodontal issues that tried everything else, and are now ready to engage in very aggressive and expensive treatment. Not for the average family. I did not know all of these things, but later discovered that a friend had the same experience and of course chose another orthodontist. This is probably the reason he does not provide a free consult like anyone else. His approach is too aggressive for most people. so now you know and can make a decision as his office will not tell you that this first visit will require your whole paycheck."
