Historic Homestake Opera House 313 West Main Street, Lead, SD 57754
About the Business
The Historic Homestake Opera House, located at 313 West Main Street in Lead, South Dakota, is a truly remarkable institution with a rich history. Built in 1914 by Phoebe Hearst and her Homestake Gold Mining Company, this stunning performing arts venue and recreation center once boasted a magnificent theater with 1,000 seats, along with a library, bowling alley, billiards hall, social hall, and heated indoor swimming pool.
For decades, the Opera House was the heart of the community in Lead, offering entertainment, education, and a place for residents to come together. Sadly, a devastating fire in 1984 destroyed much of the building, but efforts have been made to restore and preserve this important piece of history.
Today, the Historic Homestake Opera House Society works tirelessly to ensure that the Opera House continues to be a hub of art, culture, and education for generations to come. Tours of the building are available by appointment, allowing visitors to experience the beauty and history of this iconic institution.
While the Opera House may have undergone changes over the years, its significance as a cultural and community center remains unchanged. We invite you to attend an event at the Opera House and witness firsthand the magic of this historic gem.

"Beautiful building and history, in an historic town. After a fire several years ago, rebuilding continues."
"This is a very interesting venue in lead South Dakota. Definitely a place to visit and check out! We will be back!"
"The place is a must visit if youโre in Leeds or Deadwood, very beautiful, and you pay 10 bucks for going back through time tunnel to golden age. There is also a small historical exhibition inside the opera house. You need to make a phone call or online reservation for visiting."
"Wonderful to see the historic opera house in the process of restoration after the 1984 fire that nearly totally destroyed this great venue. They are currently presenting shows here even while it is being restored. Beautiful old theatre"
"I had heard about the Opera House from an author who uses it in some of her books. Beautiful building that is in use. Lots of history. The building did experience a fire in mid 80's. You can see the damage, you can also see the painstaking restoration going on to bring it back to its glory days. Worth the visit for a tour or for a performance as the acoustics were great. If you take the tour stop at the end and go through the exhibits in what used to be the library. This building has character and charm. Truly a phoenix rising from the ashes."
