Reviews of Brian Hubel
"I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, and the center of life on the farm was the barn. Years spent working in that barn taught me values that still serve me to this day, and created memories that will last for the rest of my life. Years passed and the herd was sold. The barn grew silent, and eventually fell into disrepair due to lack of use and upkeep. Always one to take pride in keeping his homestead looking good, Dad decided to take it down rather than let it eventually fall into an ugly heap. Wanting to keep part of that old barn with me, I loaded a truck with beams and brought them with me to Colorado in the hopes of one day having a table made from them. The search began for someone I would trust to turn this priceless wood into a centerpiece in our home that we could continue to build memories around. Several visits with "commercial furniture makers" in Colorado Springs left us feeling frustrated, and wondering if we'd ever find the right "artist". Then, one day, someone encouraged us to reach out to Brian Hubel. A flurry of email messages back and forth, questions asked and answered, and finally the decision to actually meet face to face and look at our precious material. Within minutes of actually meeting him, his genuine enthusiasm and infectious can-do personality sealed the deal. We had found our guy. Shortly after our first meeting, we spent an hour and a half closely examining every face of every beam, imagining how each feature of each piece of wood might contribute unique character to our vision. At the end of that get together, we watched as Brian drove off with the precious cargo in his possession. Over the course of the next few months, Brian kept us up to date with frequent updates, including pics of his progress. More impressively, when Brian came up with an idea that he thought might improve on our original plan, or came to a critical juncture of the project, he would invite us to his shop. We'd move boards around, discuss options, and collaborate on the way ahead. My wife and I would leave his shop feeling less like we hired someone to build us a table, and more like we had a good friend doing us an incredible favor by creating an incredible work of art that would soon become part of us. Several times, my wife would muse, "I don't know who's more excited about this, Brian or us!" His enthusiasm was that evident. 4 months after first reaching out to him, Brian delivered our vision. It's perfectly imperfect. From day one, we emphasized we didn't want a smooth, new looking table. We wanted a table that looked and felt like it came from a barn...our barn. I wanted to feel the grain and the knots; to see the saw marks and traces of the paint. To say Brian delivered doesn't do the word "understatement" justice. We are thrilled with what he created from scratch, from a stack of old beams. We watched with not insignificant emotion as he and Adam carefully brought it into our home and assembled it with great care and pride. This isn't just a table. This is every memory of my childhood and upbringing, materialized as something I can look at and touch every single day. My wife, Robin, took a picture of me sitting at the table shortly after Brian and Adam left our home. I'm already lost in the memories, feeling everything coming out of what Brian helped bring into our home, and I'm not too proud to say I've got tears in my eyes. I sit at it as I type this. There's no one I else I could envision entrusting with this project. From day one, Brian was attentive, enthusiastic, engaging and responsive. His passion and skills for his craft are unparalleled. I can not offer a stronger endorsement: if you're looking for someone to create something more than just furniture, Brian's your guy."
"Brian has worked with us on several different projects over the last three years: an entryway bench and coat rack, a floor clock, a wall hanging, a fireplace mantle, a wine storage wall, and spice storage cabinets. For each project, Brian has spent as much time as needed to make sure the product would be not only a beautiful work of art but to fully serve its functional purpose. All the works have been meticulously crafted, with an attention to the smallest details that is rarely seen these days. We highly recommended Brian for quality, custom, woodworking. See pictures. "Brian created a custom wall piece for our home. The piece is two joined natural edge slabs connected by wood butterflies. This piece is of the highest craftmanship and artistry. Brian respected and highlighted the highly figured grain of the sapele boards. He created the connections on the show side as well as the wall side with the same care and attention to detail. Nature created this beauty and Brian elevated it to an heirloom that will be passed down as part of our childrens legacy. Beyond the obvious master woodworker that he is; Brian is a joy to work with. He is professional, listens, and strives to create the perfect piece for you. This wall piece is a showstopper in our home. We never get tired of looking at it."
"Brian has been teaching me fine woodworking for quite a few years. He is a brilliant teacher and builds beautiful furniture, some of his pieces have been featured in Popular Woodworking Magazine. He is an amazing mentor and I am excited to continue my woodworking education from him. If you are considering getting any woodworking done Brian is the go-to woodworker."
"Brian Hubel is both an artist and an unparalleled craftsman. He has created multiple furniture pieces for us that are beautiful and also incredibly well made. He is also a deeply honorable man and is a genuine pleasure to work with. My wife Christine and I give him the highest possible recommendation."
