"A lovely, quiet spot to explore a fen and its unique plants and animals."
"Rowley Fen is a very unique natural wetland area. The area contains some unique plants, and many wildlife species for nature enthusiasts to enjoy. A fen is different from other wetlands because the ground water flows constantly to the surface directly out of the limestone bedrock. This creates an alkaline water source that causes plant matter to take longer to decompose and results in mounds of peat forming on top of the water. The peat mounds have a springy, spongy feel to them that is a rare treat to walk on. If you visit this area make sure to wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet. The area is open to public hunting (photo - hummingbird moth on fringed gentian by Dan Cohen)"
"An excellent place to see remnant populations of wetland and wet prairie plants. The unplowed remnant is in the low, wet area south and west of the parking lot. This is a rare and precious reminder of what Iowa used to be. Look closely, and you'll find beautiful and interesting things throughout the growing season! Wear shoes that can get wet."
