About the Business
The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, located at 1400 Inspiration Place Southwest in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a unique institution that serves as both a library and a museum, as well as a popular tourist attraction. Without the support of our members, sponsors, and other supporters, we would not be able to celebrate and share the culture, people, and histories of the Czech and Slovak communities. Our dedicated volunteers play a crucial role in helping us continue to serve the community, with tasks suited for all ages and abilities.
We strive to provide informative, engaging, and fun events to the Cedar Rapids area, focusing on the rich history of the Czech and Slovak people. From hands-on workshops to exhibit opening receptions, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can also sample traditional Czech and Slovak cuisine, such as open-faced sandwiches, Čevapčiči sausage, and the beloved pork roast with dumplings and sauerkraut in our cooking classes.
Join us to learn how to make traditional Czech and Slovak treats like loupáček and Laskomka, or participate in the annual Houby Days festival presented by the Czech Village Association. We are proud to start new traditions that showcase our community's immigrant history and support our mission and vision. "My wife and I had some time to burn between landing in Cedar Rapids and catching a shuttle to Dubuque, and we found this museum on the map and couldn't resist stopping in to learn some familial history. We only had about 20 minutes, so I asked the staff for the highlights. We were able to rush through the Faces of Freedom exhibit in the Jiruska gallery and the Sleger Family cabin. The exhibits were informing, entertaining, and plentiful. The staff was so kind and understanding of our situation, and very knowledgeable. While our time there was way too short for my liking, it's only prompted me to want to learn more. If I ever find myself back in Cedar Rapids I'd make a point to schedule a longer visit."
"I've known about this museum for what seems like forever, but had never visited until recently. So on a recent trip to Iowa, I decided I would spend one half of a day checking out things in Cedar Rapids and this was on my agenda. It's not a particularly huge museum, but definitely worth the admission fee to check out the exhibits on display, whether you have and Czech or Slovak heritage or not. If you are passing through Cedar Rapids, it's a good place to stop in as well as checking out some of the places in the surrounding neighborhood!"
"My husband and I stumbled in here, the displays were so informative and I love learning about another culture. We ended walking around for a couple of hours, the clothes and music were by far my favorite, the ship was also pretty cool. The gift shop seemed crazy high in prices but worth getting a couple of trinkets to commemorate your visit, the ladies working there were so nice!"
