About the Business
Heron Haven Nature Center, located at 11809 Old Maple Road in Omaha, Nebraska, is a beautiful spring-fed wetland and wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to one of the last oxbow wetlands of the Big Papillion Creek within the city limits of Omaha.
The center serves as an important educational and research asset for the Omaha community, with biology and ecology students from local schools and universities using the wetland for ecological studies and surveys of native plants and aquatic animals.
Visitors to Heron Haven can explore the spacious Education Center, which offers lectures and short courses on conservation, birding, photography, and natural history. The center also features a small nature museum and a reference library with books, periodicals, and videos.
Trails are open to the public from sunup to sundown every day, and organized events are held regularly. The Friends of Heron Haven, a non-profit organization, works to preserve and restore the natural biodiversity of the sanctuary.
Through donations, grants, and membership dues, Heron Haven has become a unique inner city sanctuary with a nature center, boardwalk, butterfly garden, and a variety of wildlife including mink, fox, deer, turtles, woodchucks, and fish. Reviews
"Beautiful little park hidden off of Maple Street! Cute, scenic trails and lots of fauna and water for native species to rest in the city. Definitely the perfect stroll to get away without getting away and to learn!"
"It was my first visit and I’d just seen the boardwalk while driving by. It was beautiful and the perfect place to walk or sit at one of the many sitting spots and enjoy being in nature. Since it’s winter/fall at the time I’m writing this, I would recommend coming in the spring or start of summer to see the plants in full bloom and more wildlife :)"
"A hidden away spot in busy surroundings. Ponds, herons, perching birds, butterflies & mosquitos abound in summertime. A beautiful planted garden also awaits you with loads of flowers. Be sure to bring a camera or a great cellphone with you so you can capture the moment!"
"Great little spot to watch wildlife. You may want to bring binoculars if you want a closer look. It was a little smaller than I thought it might be, but very well kept and pleasant."
"This was the longest these kiddos have been quiet in days! Not even a noise as they tip toed, yes you read that right, tip toed through to try to not scare any animals! It is an excellent learning place as well as a great place to just stretch your legs! We had a great time here and hope to be back!"
