Devastation Trail
Crater Rim Drive, Volcano, HI 96785
About Us

Devastation Trail, located on Crater Rim Drive in Volcano, Hawaii, is a must-visit park and tourist attraction. Visitors can stroll along a paved path through a starkly beautiful recovering landscape that was buried by falling cinder from the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption. Witness the incredible sight of life returning to this once devastated area, with threatened nēnē (Hawaiian geese) often spotted in the vicinity.
Visitors are urged to use caution when parking in the area and to refrain from feeding the nēnē. These unique birds are a threatened species and need protection, as cars are a leading cause of adult nēnē deaths in the park. Feeding the nēnē can also lead them to beg for food and approach moving vehicles, posing a danger to both the birds and visitors. Don't miss the opportunity to experience the beauty and resilience of nature at Devastation Trail.

"It’s windy on the trail, but very nice view."
"Paved road called Old Crater Rim Drive Trail to gravel trail to viewing areas / lookouts. Really nice view of main Kiluea Caldera from the opposite side of the main road accessible viewing area. View of Keanakako'i crater was very good as well. Wide road in and out took about 20 min each way to walk. Road had almost no shade and was hot so be prepared for that. Would recommend."
"easy trail with amazing view! Highly recommended. Considering the damage the volcano is doing to the trail, this is definitely not one you want to delay because it might not be there in the future. A great option to get a very good view of the volcano without the harder hike."
"Awesome trail to take to get to the centre of Kilauea Iki Crater and onto Thurston Lava Tube. I then walked from the lava tube back to the car park on the road. About 8k in all. Worth taking the side trip to see Kilauea erupting (closed to cars at time of writing, but about a 3.2k return walk)."
"Great trail for viewing lava & the scenic volcanic landscape. Highly recommend going to see the lava & checking with park rangers at visitor center for updated information on its conditions & where to view it. If you park in the overflow parking (Pu’upua’i lot) for lava viewing you can walk through a trail with a barren desert-like volcanic landscape with some forest areas - Devastation Trail (be prepared - it gets pretty dark at night if no one else is around). This trail then links to the regular parking lot which takes you to the lava viewing via a paved road."
