Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park
About the Business
Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park is a unique and culturally rich park located on the windward side of O’ahu in Hawaii. This park is one of the few publicly owned ahupuaʻa, or ancient Hawaiian land divisions, in the state. Spanning nearly 5,300 acres from sea level at Kahana Bay to 2,670 feet at Puʻu Pauao on the Koʻolau mountains, Kahana is known for its lush landscapes and traditional Hawaiian cultural sites.
Visitors to the park can explore remnants of Hawaiian culture such as a heiau (religious temple), koʻa (fishing shrines), fishponds, house sites, agricultural terraces, and more. The park also offers two hiking trails, the Kapa’ele’ele Ko’a and Keaniani Lookout Trail, and the Nakoa Trail, both providing scenic views and opportunities to immerse in the natural beauty of the valley.
As a "living park", Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park aims to preserve and share native Hawaiian cultural traditions and values. With thirty-one families living within the ahupuaʻa, visitors can participate in interpretive programs that highlight the unique lifestyle and heritage of rural windward Oʻahu. Additionally, the park offers cultural programs for groups interested in learning more about Hawaiian traditions.
Whether you're interested in hiking through a tropical rainforest, exploring ancient Hawaiian sites, or simply enjoying the stunning views of Kahana Bay, Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors looking to connect with the rich history and natural beauty of Hawaii.

"Did the smaller 17 passenger Jurassic tour. It was recommended and worth it as you will get see the entire park and time for getting out and photo. Our guide Christopher from DC was AMAZING and explained so much and definitely made the trip memorable!!!"
"This is indisputably a beautiful location. Unfortunately, it does not make for a good camping experience. For starters, the campsites are just a few feet away from public parking and a busy highway. Next, the bathrooms are locked in the evening. The worst part of our experience was a termite swarm that descended while we were cooking dinner right at dusk. There was also a group of beach combers picking through all of the campsites and garbage bins after dark. My recommendation is to visit during the day and hike the beautiful trails or hang out at the beach. Bring good footwear and give yourself extra time as the trail is quite rough. Don’t reserve a campsite."
"If you visit Hawaii you have to visit this park. Lots of movie scenes such a Jurassic World and a lot of history and World War II bonkers for display. In my opinion this is where you will get the best views and best pictures of the scenery and authentic Honolulu Hawaii. Be sure to do the zip lining tour for in my opinion it is the best and covers all of the Tours in one. This destination is a must see in Honolulu."
"The hike itself is straight up most of the way. There's brush that's really low and dry so its hard to tell where exactly the drop off is and your just getting scratched from all the dry stuff underneath the greenery. Nothing life threatening but you'll come out of the trail with scratches for sure. Its hot so bring extra water and sunscreen. We took our 10, 8, and 6 year old. Enjoy the scenery when you get there. Stay on the main trail. There are other trails that head off in different directions but I think thats where other hikers end up lost and we end up seeing them late at night with the flashlights trying to find a way out. (We live just on the other side of Kahana) Be safe but have fun!"
"This was an amazing find. We've visited Hawaii many times but we'd never been to this place until now. I would highly recommend this location... well worth the time and expense. It was fun to see so many familiar scenes from movies. What a great time we had. We took the movie set tour. They offer several other outings, including horse back and four wheeler tours too. You can spend an hour or two or spend the whole day.... you'll find many options."
