"My wife and I kayaked across the bay (no car access, only via kayak or hiking) to see this. We were greeted by spinner dolphins as we started the easy paddle across. The water was amazingly clear and teaming with marine life. While we didn't snorkel, many were and said it was pretty good. While the monument will mostly be appreciated by history buffs, the experience is outstanding. Side note, to get your kayak and/or snorkel gear, go to Maile's Vacation Rentals which is on the ocean side of Beach Road as you head toward Kealakekua Bay Park. Fair rates, he helps you push off and pulls you back in from his own little bay, offers a dry bag for things you don't want to get wet, takes good care of the equipment and has a warm shower you can use when you get back. Great little business I would recommend."
