Reviews
"Visited Black Point Fissures yesterday and then continued on the back way to Bodie, both super interesting and scenic, especially on a mild winter day with no one else around. Fantastic views of Mono Lake and its islands. As others have noted, wear solid shoes and long pants for the Fissures, and I’d recommend gloves too for scrambling through the tight and rocky parts."
"A bit difficult to get to if your car doesn't have much clearance, and there is no hiking trail but if you follow the posted sign to the fissures it is definitely worth it! An amazing spot that we just stumbled upon"
"There is great access to the shore line of Mono Lake, Black Point and the fissures from this parking lot. It is a bit of a drive down several miles of 1 lane gravel roads and there is limited parking. Once here you can hike along thd black sand beach or go straight up the black sand dunes that is Black Point to see spectacular views. If you are lucky and adventurous you may find the fissures. Slot canyons that you can explore. There is no marked trail, so just hike straight up and over Black Point to look for a dark line that opens up to become a series of fissures."
"I was here on 9/27/2020. It was not easy to get to the trail head, it is dirt road and very narrow, there is required 4x4 drive. It was a little adventure hike for me. This is sand, rock, and sagebrush trail. Because without trail, it is little hard to find. I was getting lost for about a mile. I found black point but I stopped before fissures, since we didn’t have enough water. It was so dry and hot I thought I was at Death Valley. I highly recommend wearing long pants, hiking shoes, walking sticks,go early morning, sunblock, hat, and a lot, lot, lot of water. Enjoy your adventure!"
"If you come out here, most likely you're looking for the Black Point Fissures. You find them by ascending to the high point of Black Point. Oh read the signage at the trailhead kiosk, it is educational. Not there are no trails here, though you can often follow footprints in the sand. Go early in the summer; when I started at 9:30 it was 73 (late August) but up to 100 when I got back to my car. And I suggest you wear long pants as the bushes tore my legs to bits. Anyway, they tell you that from the top the fissures are SW. I would disagree, and say they are closer to due west or even WNW. Anyway, to avoid wandering like I did, from the summit note an exposed shelf of dark rock over in that direction. If you walk directly toward, say, the middle of it, you'll stumble across the fissures. Watch your step! You have to explore a bunch to find a way in - the drop off quickly with little grade, and are often clogged with fallen debris, but you can work your way into a few of them. You can come back by hiking directly toward the lake. It looks closer than it is, and you also have to descend quite a bit. As you near the last very steep bit down, there's a use trail that contours around to the parking lot."
