"The maintenance has done a great job this year responding to our needs. Toilet was fixed last week very fast. Today I mentioned to Jacob that the furnace filter was in need of replacement, he said no problem and brought a new one right away!! Much improvement. Thank you to the team."
"I have lived here for the past 18 months. Let me tell you, the office staff are AMAZING. This is not a reflection of them but the management group in general. Over all the apartments look nice. Then they break. Cheapest materials known to the housing industry. I had a light break by just existing and the sconce fell off randomly. The doors appear to be made out of cardboard…it’s particle board, but it’s so cheap you can’t tell the difference. Finally, it’s the money. They were about to Jack up my rent 400 bucks to 800 bucks depending on the lease length or switch units. With the quality of this apartment that is absolutely asinine, and Greystar should honestly be ashamed of themselves for that. It puts their tenants in a bind as well as their office staff since they are the ones dealing with the complaints. Do yourself a favor, save some money and rent with a different company or buy a home. Minnesota has some AMAZING first time home buyer options, so you get to be your own landlord* *I’m not a realtor or broker I am just informed"
"I lived at Gates for 6 years in 2 different units and the bottom line is: Fine for a short time! (6 years was not a short time) We loved the quiet grounds, nature views, residential area, and exterior of Gates at Carlson, especially in comparison with the sterile look of many new complexes! The thing to remember is that living here is like living in a house that has been flipped. It looks nice, they've put in good appliances, but over time the wear and tear is comical. They rip out the carpet and repaint walls when a new tenant moves in, using the lowest quality materials known to man. If you get anything on the walls - pencil, scuff, sauce splatter - leave it! If you try to wipe it off, you will wipe off the paint itself. (Imagine how walls look after several years) A flipped apartment's biggest downfall is the flimsy thin structure itself. You will hear your next door neighbor's conversations and the barking dog living beneath as if they were close enough to touch. The doors into each unit are impossibly heavy yet impossibly hollow. Our 5 year old was never capable of opening it (seems like huge safety concern for elderly and disabled folks). The voices of picnic goers and more barking dogs come right to your living room through the lacking window. I cannot emphasize enough: there is absolutely no privacy whatsoever living at Gates at Carlson. We tolerated the noise as best we could, but until our dying day we have one tippy top complaint on the topic of those flimsy structures: temperature control. In a north facing (ie shaded) first floor unit with porch, it was bitterly cold and we had to duct tape the drafty porch door shut for 9 months of the year. The other three months had wasps. In a south facing (ie sunny) third floor unit with bay windows, it was as if Lucifer himself were breathing flames upon us. I have never, ever, ever been so hot, so often, in MINNESOTA. I have never, ever, ever spent so much on air conditioning. With curtains open, the apartment would reach around 88 degrees F when it was IN THE NEGATIVE TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE. In the summer, we had to say goodbye to the gorgeous bay window pond views altogether and put blackout curtains in our living room full time so that it would only reach 80 degrees rather than 90. Given the rare chance to open the windows... wasps. Yes, all of these concerns were taken to management. On the upside, we never had to pay much for heat in the winter. Like I said, you'll be fine for a short time. If you're reading this you're likely a young, single, working professional in the Twin Cities and you'll fit right in. The gym is fantastic and really well kept. The pool is such a great treat in the summer. The walking path around the Carlson Towers across the road is the best! You can't beat the easy location of being on the intersection of two major highways, yet without the noise pollution! If you're a young family, keep in mind that this complex is catering to those young, single, working professionals. Our small children learned to ride their bikes on the decrepit tennis court at Gates of Carlson - it was the only amenity they could enjoy and they really did enjoy it! However, it was demolished this year in favor of... expanding the dog park. Feels like a good metaphor, too. And one last thought on the neighbor situation (sorry this is long; when times got hard here I would sit and daydream about writing this review one day) - keep in mind that sometimes employees *live at the complex* and it's a bit of a Big Brother situation. On our last day at Gates, we propped the glass doors open so our family could roll the little moving dollies in and out to the moving truck at the curb, when an employee who lived in the building came out, looked us in the eye, and unpropped the doors. He intentionally locked everyone outside with the moving truck. A horrible last impression of this place our babies learned to walk. And did I mention the surprise $500 rent increase? Heads up!"
"I have lived at Gates for the past year and have really enjoyed it. The office manager, Erin, has been extremely helpful several times throughout the year and is always willing to help you out with anything you need. Important amenities like the pool, gym, and garage parking were all great. Smaller, nice-to-have amenities like the grills, safe package room, and great walking trails nearby were awesome as well. Overall, it was a great experience!"
