Southdale ObGyn

"I wanted to share this review for awareness and to hopefully encourage changes to be made so this situation doesn't happen to anyone else! I had been receiving my routine health/medical care from Southdale OBGYN since 2021 and was a satisfied patient of the clinic. In November 2023, I started pursuing an infertility work up since I hadn't been able to conceive in 12+ months of trying. I was at the Edina clinic for a required pregnancy test prior to an HSG. I had just finished my period and fully anticipated a negative test. I gave my urine sample and went to the lab as the nurse had instructed and there she told me to have a seat and wait for the test results. There was only one other patient in the lab with me at the time. Very quickly, the test was done and the nurse walked over and shoved the test in my face without saying a word. I looked at her in confusion and she said "It's positive." I was in total shock. She asked if I was expecting this and I said "No, I just had my period and I'm here for an HSG, this makes no sense. But of course I want it to be positive." She handed me the test and went to get a doctor. They pulled me from the lab and into a room and I was told that I was going to be getting a blood draw to check my HCG levels and Dr. Swigert stopped by the room and told me that "bleeding in early pregnancy can be normal". I sat there holding this positive pregnancy test (with my name on it!) and was thinking this was crazy, but amazing, and had already started to plan how I was going to tell my husband that we were finally pregnant! Ultimately, Dr. Lewis came in the room and told me that the nurse had tested the wrong urine sample, and that the very positive pregnancy test in my hand...wasn't actually mine. I didn't ask for more details on how this could have happened, because now I was in shock all over again...now with the fact that I actually wasn't pregnant after all, and that instead I was holding someone else's pee in my hands. I assume it belonged to the one other woman who had been in the lab with me. I am currently receiving infertility treatment elsewhere because this mix up was very upsetting for me and made me lose trust in my care through Southdale OBGYN. To this day, that is still the only positive pregnancy test that I've ever held, and it wasn't even actually mine. I understand that mistakes happen, but unfortunately this mistake is now a permanent part of my journey in trying to start a family. Ultimately, I am hoping that measures are being put in place to prevent mix ups of patient samples like this, ESPECIALLY when you are telling someone struggling with infertility that they are pregnant, when they're really not. This was a mistake that resulted in a deep level of disappointment that will stick with me for a very long time."
