"I usually have good experiences at this location, but my recent visit was not so great. The nurse started by asking us to list all the medications my dad took by their full medical names, even though she had the full list with her, and then went on to list them for us, only to then judge us when we didn't know the full names (because we're regular people who can't recall the full medical names of all our meds). She subsequently "suggested" that it was my responsibility to have the full list, and that I could be a better daughter by having it ready all the time. She literally says to me, "from a daughter to a daughter, I would go home and write down all the names so I can be a better caretaker." Uh, first of all, I'm not my dad's caretaker because my dad is capable of handling his own medication and doesn't need me to control that for him. I'm only here because you guys fail to get my parents translators every time they come into this office. Are you literally saying that he's incapable of taking care of himself just because English is not his first language? She said all this without any consideration for our cultural background, lifestyle, and language comprehension. I immediately closed up like a clam and no longer wanted to have a conversation with her. Goes to show how important it is to understand the community you serve. Or better yet, maybe you should just not jump to conclusions. She was probably trying to give me advice, but she did not communicate that well. It's not too late for her. The nurse (and maybe all of the staff) should get some updated professional development training on cultural competency and consideration before judging the patients by condescending and patronizing them. The doctor was nice though."
