Reviews of Semper Elementary School
"Best school I have ever been to!! All the teachers are awesome and all care about teaching well. And also the principle is pretty cool too, if you are cool with her she is cool with you. (In my opinion) Mrs. Doerr, is the coolest and happiest teacher I have had in my life. She knows when to have fun and when to teach. Excellent teacher if you get her, (in any grade) you will have the best year at Semper, and you will remember it for the rest of your life. I recommend your kid to go here. I did and I learned and had fun in any and all units. [Rating from me] 5/5."
"This is an amazing school. The teachers are very caring and yes they are fair and give each child an equal opportunity. Every year each grade level has a musical or concert they perform, my son loves it. He has learned so much since coming to this school it has been a blessing."
"This is amazing school and I’m very much satisfied with my only kid studying in Semper for last 3 years. Grade 3 teacher was awesome, she guided us in the right direction. Grade 4 teacher was absolutely disciplined. Grade 5 teacher is already doing a good job making my kid confident and encouraging her all her good work in Maths. I didn’t find any issue with school staff and management at all in last 3 years."
"This school is stuck on the idea of making everything fair for students and does not teach students in accordance with what the real world is like. This is a shame because these kids are cheated out of true learning and a well rounded education. This school is building a generation of young adults who think that everyone gets a trophy. On Field Day, there were no ribbons or 1st place. Every child got stickers and the colors had no meaning because that "wouldn't have been fair". All the events were "team oriented" meaning there were no winners or losers and kids had zero motivation to try their best or even participate. It was the worst field day ever and all the parents and a lot of teachers agreed it was ridiculous. When my student ran for a student council position, she took the initiative of coming up with some very clever ideas and we made posters to post around the school. When we were hanging them, the 5th grade teach in charge told me I had to take them down because each student was only allowed one poster and that "was only fair to everyone". So a bright student gets no appreciation for creativity and innovation? Zero. Bright ideas are constantly shut down. Last year my student was a in a class of 32 students with one teacher and a student teacher for half the year. The classes are noisy and distracting. The class took ONE field trip. We were told there would be three this year, so far they have only had one. Our 4th grade teacher Mrs. Block was the worst teacher we have ever had. When I was finally given the opportunity for an in person meeting and gave her feedback on her constant negative moods and how it affects my student, she was visibly angry and conducted herself in a manner that had me appalled. If the teachers at this school cannot accept constructive feedback in a respectful manner, how are they teaching students to do so? When I asked about having projects with self-directed learning so students can choose topics of study, she responded that she could not do that because that wouldn't work for everyone. You can understand why a lot of the teachers operate this way when you work with the principal, Kim Schlarbaum. Kim has no strategic vision for Semper. She runs her staff with a my way or the highway attitude. As a leader, she should be setting the example and creating a culture of creativity and idea generation for her staff but I don't see that happening. This school is obsessed with a one size fits all, everything is fair attitude. When I emailed the principal to notify her that my child was switching schools, she didn't even have the decency to respond, and I've known her for years! Wow. Don't even get me started on the school's drop off area. What a mess! The only good thing about this school is that they have an excellent art teach Mrs. Thaden and PE teacher Mrs. Cooper. That was the only highlight of my child's FIVE years of attending this school."
"Great school, but current principal (Mrs. Schlaarbum, 2015) was horrible. Some kid that was "Special" decided to start a fight with me, for no reason. We were both sent to the principal's office, and she said that I was the one who started the fight, even though having several eye witnesses backing up my statement. Recommend the school, not the staff. Except for every 5th grade and lower teacher, the art, music, and PE teachers are all great."
