Lyons Stadium, located at 139 West Highland Avenue in Nevada, Missouri, is a historic institution with a rich baseball history. The stadium is named after George T. Lyons, a former pitcher for two major league clubs in the 1920s. Lyons, also known as "Smooth," was a local merchant and served as Vernon County Treasurer. He was a passionate baseball player who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Browns.
Established in 1947 on land owned by the Barton family, Lyons Stadium has been home to numerous teams over the years, including Little League teams, city recreational teams, the Nevada Red Sox, the Nevada Colonels, and the Nevada High School Tigers. The stadium has survived tornadoes and continues to be a beloved sports venue in the community.
The stadium features a wooden grandstand with a hand-operated scoreboard, and the field is maintained by the Nevada R-5 School District in partnership with the Nevada Griffons. The press box, dedicated to Finis Moss, was built in 2002, and a pavilion with BBQ grill and picnic tables was added in 2010.
With Bermuda Grass infield turf and Oklahoma red clay pitching mound and base paths, Lyons Stadium offers a classic baseball experience for players and fans alike. The stadium is a testament to the enduring legacy of George T. Lyons and his love for the game of baseball.
