"When I adopted my dog from one of their partner shelters, I was told everything would be covered under a new policy as long as I enrolled within 10 days from the adoption date. 9 months later my claim for prescription food has been denied because companion protect is claiming it is a preexisting condition. What's funny about this is my dog wasn't on a prescription diet when I adopted her. So how can this be a preexisting condition. I strongly recommend finding a different insurance company for your pet. All the pamphlets and flyers I was given at adoption time was a lie. This company will not honor their own policies"
"I adopted a dog from the shelter and received multiple emails from Companion Protect stating that I could enroll in their pet insurance based upon the shelter's medical exam of my dog within 10 days. If enrollment was not completed within 10 days, a new medical exam would be required. I did enroll within 10 days but was then told that my dog has a medical condition they will not cover. I was not made aware of this condition when I adopted my pet, as she was given an exam and deemed healthy. Per Companion Protect's advertising, this means my pet should be covered for her medical issues. They refuse to cover her for urinary tract issues which I did not know she had, nor was made aware of by the shelter. As far as I am concerned, I adopted a healthy dog and enrolled in this insurance within the requisite 10 days, so anything found after the shelter exam should be covered. Also, their website states the following: You can’t know a shelter pet’s entire medical history Shelters and rescues simply can’t know everything that’s happened to your new buddy in their past life. Unforeseen or untreated health issues are always possible, and proper coverage is critical. The cost of treating unforeseen medical issues is a primary reason why adopters relinquish pets to a shelter. This would mean they cover something like a congenital urinary tract condition which was untreated in my dog, not identified at the shelter, and refused by Companion Protect."
"TLDR: find another company to get insured under. there are plenty out there that will not try to wiggle out of covering costs for vet visits - we are currently covered under another company that has never questioned my claims like this. When I got a second pet, I decided to go with Companion Protect instead of the pet insurance we have for first pet so we could save a few bucks a month. It was a HUGE mistake. Their claims process is cumbersome - you submit a claim with medical records, and they ask you to fill out a survey, duplicating much of the information you've already submitted. Not a particularly big deal, but I personally think it's a method to try to trap you into saying something so they can deny your coverage. In our experience, we adopted a dog from the shelter with a cleared vet record. That night, I noticed our dog was itching, so I made a vet appointment. Apparently my honesty on the claims form came back to bite me, and the claim was denied as a 'pre-existing condition'. An absolutely ridiculous practice to squeeze money out of your customers. Happy to leave as soon as possible."
"Was a great service with value at one point. Apparently, they no longer will pay for care direct. So whether you need to have a "free" annual office visit ot a $5000 Emergency surgery for your furry friend. You will now have to front the money and file for reimbursement. Looking for a replacement service for my 3 dogs."
"Companion protect has been a waste of money now for months. I have a dog named Captain that is having surgery as I type this. I’ve been trying to get pre approved for the claim for multiple months and on the day of the surgery they tell me they can not provide coverage. I sent every document from multiple clinics to be as clear as I could be. Also, months ago they wouldn’t reimburse me for the medicine he needed and now it just seems like a scam. Highly recommend to never use this pet insurance company ever!!"
