About the Business

The Trail of Tears institution, located on West Marcella Drive in Springfield, Missouri, commemorates the survival of the Cherokee people who were forcibly removed from their homelands in the 1830s. This historic event saw the Cherokee people travel by foot, horse, wagon, or steamboat from Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Visitors can learn more about this tragic journey by exploring interactive maps, historic sites, and trip planning resources. The institution also provides information on national historic trails and offers opportunities to connect through social media, mobile apps, videos, and other digital media. For more information, visitors can contact the National Trails Office at the address in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Reviews
"It's really neat to see part of the trail of tears. If it weren't for the markers, I don't think anyone would know what they were looking at. Kinda sad that it has been encroached on by adjoining neighborhood."
"The Trail of Tears, here’s an original location where the Trail of Tears passed through the area, something that never should’ve happened the way it did, however it’s really something special to walk along one of the original paths from the Trail of Tears."
"This is just a small part of the extensive Trail of Tears. It runs about half a mile long like an alley behind houses. There are a few signs explaining its importance."
"There are some good markers telling of the history of the area. Its a trail that goes through a neighborhood. We did not go very far down the wooded trail as we could see mosquitos and were not prepared for that."
"Although this is a very short part of the Trail of Tears I still took my two children for a visit. I was very pleased to see some informational stations just a short walk down the trail placed their by the National Park Service. The street parking is great for personal vehicles, no need to park at nearby commercial parking lots. We spent enough time to reflect on the Trail as well as learn about this section of the trail."
