"I booked the Airbnb at 159 Spring Street in Eureka Springs for a 2-night stay today 8/4/23 at 8:42 a.m. This short trip was for myself & my 8-year-old son & the reason for the last-minute booking was to have a nice trip away before he starts 2nd grade on 8/17/23. I had contemplated flying out from Wichita, KS but ultimately decided to make the 5-hour drive as soon as I got my son from his father. I got him at 1:00p.m., we were out the door at 1:50 p.m. to make this commute & I communicated with the host, Aspen Vaught, that we would be arriving close to their deadline check-in of 8:00 p.m. after making some bathroom breaks & dinner. During the commute, I found out that he had gone to the lake during his week with his dad & said he had vomited a couple days prior after having drank some lake water. We were over an hour into our drive when my son said he felt really ill & I was rushing to get him to a bathroom to get sick. I made calls to my husband as well as my son’s father & our family doctor. Our doctor said there was a really bad blue, green algae that was causing some lakes to close down. I can only suspect that it could be e.coli since he was still physically sick from a few days prior. I was worried about being far from home and medical care that I decided to make the drive back home & had a prescription called in to pick up on the route back home. I communicated with Aspen & informed her of the change of plans. I had no idea of the cancellation policy because I had zero plans on canceling. When I got back to Wichita, I got this reply from Aspen: “I'm sorry to hear that your son is not feeling well. The cancellation policy is as follows: Cancellation policy Strict: Full refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of booking, if the check-in date is at least 14 days away. 50% refund for cancellations made at least 7 days before check-in. No refunds for cancellations made within 7 days of check-in. I hope your son feels better soon.” I booked on the day of staying so the 48 hours policy doesn’t apply. I also had to make the best decision for my son & come home not knowing what his illness was. The total charge I paid was $322.52 which included a $65 cleaning fee. This clearly isn’t right & tells me that they do not truly care for their guests but just making money. I would like to add that I host multiple listings on Airbnb currently & in the past 10 years (some past reviews do not show because I had changed my email address) and I have great reviews! I have managed class A multifamily apartments in the downtown Wichita market for 20 years. Regarding my Airbnb guests, I have had people who have had to cancel, for whatever reason, and if it’s within good reason, I fully refund my guests. I completely understand if I had taken my rentals offline due to a reservation and lost it due to someone having a change of heart & not refunding them but when it is something out of the guests' control and something that pertains to illness- out of good faith, it should be refunded, especially when the rental was available the morning of and I had planned to stay that night. Ultimately, I do not recommend that you use this company unless you are willing to take the risk of not being truly appreciated & cared for."
