"Our 6 year old son is very anxious and has had to be chased down for vaccinations in the past. When his doctor ordered an endoscopy, we were naturally concerned. (We even joked with one another that the anesthesia needed to come in dart form.) However, our fears were totally unfounded. Everybody there was polite and considerate. The nurses explained everything to our son while making eye contact at his level. They asked his permission to check his vitals so he was able to feel a part of the process and have some agency, rather than having medical exams “done to” him without explanation or his consent. As a result, he was calm, relaxed and didn’t run off once. The anesthesiologist gave him a liquid medication to prevent separation anxiety before going to the OR. She started the IV after giving him “sleepy air” so he didn’t have to be awake for it. He even got to choose the “sleepy air” fragrance!! The hospital was clean, the support staff were wonderful and we felt confident that he would be safe with the doctors and nurses who were responsible for his care."
