"My brother Raymond was in Select Speciality Hospital Gulfport on three different occasions. The first time he was put on a ventilator because he had gotten Septic from a Pressure Wound at a different facility. Select worked with him to to remove the ventilator and breathe on his own. The Pulmonary Specialist took him off of some of his medications and was able to get him off of vent. All of the staff was wonderful. We could not have ask for better care from Doctors, Nurses, Aids (CNA's) and other staff. He got the best treatment possible. The Wound Care Team was excellent and always open to answer questions. All of the staff were always sweet and kind to him. In fact, they really spoiled him rotten on all three hospital stays. Whenever he pressed the call button, they were quick to check on him. Also, the CEO, John O'Keefe checked on him regularly (almost every day), to see if he was doing OK. He would ask my brother lots of questions to make sure his needs were being met. He was also open to any questions I had. I was elated and surprised that the CEO would take up so much time with my brother. We will be forever grateful to Mr. O'Keefe and all of the staff at Select Speciality Hospital for their excellent care."
"All of the nurses physical therapy and assistants went above and beyond to take care of my brother. Although very short staffed, their compassion and bedside manners were excellent."
"Do not send your loved ones to this facility. My mom, was sent to Select after receiving a tracheostomy at Forrest General. Select was suppose to wean her off of the tracheostomy but that never happened. There was absolutely no communication by any doctors. When I would call and ask to speak to her doctor, eventually they would call, but couldn't answer all my questions because they didn't have her chart in front of them. When I tried to speak to the nurses, most of them were abrupt with me and I couldn't get much info. This was happening during COVID so I couldn't go to see her unless I was going for training to bring her home. When I was able to see her, her fingernails were filthy, her mattress was dirty with no sheets, just a pad under her behind, her tubes and suction equipment were filthy and not emptied and she had unexplained bruising on her body. When I tried to tell the doctors or nurses some of her history they either didn't want to hear it or figured I didn't know what I was talking about. She had a seizure and I was never called, I found out when I showed up for training. I was suppose to spend the night but since she had the seizure ,a nurse came in and said I had to leave, I did not want to especially since I was going to spend the night that day, and she was so out of it, but again was told to leave and then the nurse also informed me that her mom just passed away. Just what I needed to hear as I was leaving. I was planning on bringing her home but it took awhile because every time a date was set something would happen, it took a month but I finally was able to get her home. Once home we tried to get her back to whatever normal was going to be but we failed and she passed, at least she was with us at home being loved and cared for and not at Select. Please try and find somewhere or someone to help you with your loved one, do not take them here. There is more to tell but I am sure even with the little information I included in here I will get tagged and deleted but I will keep trying to get the word out!!!"
"About six months after my dad’s severe motorcycle accident on May 29, 2020, he was transported to Select Specialty Hospital-Gulf Coast on November 10, 2020. Upon his arrival at Select, my dad was already on a trach and a ventilator due to the severity of his injuries. During my dad’s first few weeks at Select, between the Respiratory and Speech Therapists spending a lot of time with him, he was off the ventilator and on a trach collar, breathing on his own with little oxygen being provided, breathing out of his mouth and his nose. After facing some setbacks, on July 8, 2021, my dad was sent by ambulance to another hospital for a surgical procedure by a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon. It was discovered by one of my dad’s doctors at Select that my dad had been breathing through an approximately three millimeter sized hole, which was causing episodes of apnea where my dad stopped breathing, blocking his airway, preventing him from getting enough oxygen to breathe properly. It was only a matter of time before this hole completely closed and shut off his airway altogether. Surgery was a success and my dad began doing more with physical therapy, lasting longer on the trach collar, rather than strictly depending on the ventilator to breathe for him. Whereas, when he was on the trach collar, he was doing most of the breathing on his own and the machine was just there as a backup. Fast forward to months down the road, my dad had more going against him than he had going for him. Although he made significant improvements since his accident, especially since becoming a patient at Select Specialty Hospital, it just wasn’t ever enough. We advocated to have my dad transferred to a long term care rehabilitative facility since Select Specialty was only short term, preferring a neuro rehab facility, which we felt was what my dad needed to really improve due to his injuries. Unfortunately, due to how much time had passed since my dad’s accident, the fact that he was both on a ventilator and a trach and of course insurance/Medicaid specific to each facility, were all factors that stood in the way, hindering any opportunities my dad may have had going in his favor to be relocated. After so many set backs, my dad continued to fight, wanting to improve. The severity of my dad’s injury and his situation just wasn’t ever going to allow that. His body, having had enough, began fighting against him instead of with him and began to shut down. The staff at Select never gave up on my dad, supporting him, caring for him and advocating for him just as we, his family, had. My dad had the biggest support system, at least one outside visitor every day that he was at Select, which he probably holds the record for the longest patient at Select, especially considering that it was a short term care facility and my dad managed to be a patient there from November 10, 2020 to January 19, 2023, when he took his last breath, surrounded by family and the caregivers of Select that became family to all of us. My dad was never alone at Select, having all of his caregivers, including the custodians, in his corner, supporting him, encouraging him and rooting for him. They all became so special to us, treated my dad like he was one of their own family members. The entire third floor of Select was in tears the day my dad passed away. Many of the nurses, respiratory therapists and administration even attended my dad’s funeral service, in addition to sending flowers and messages to our family. My dad really made an impact on Select Specialty Hospital and Select made even more of an impact on our family! I would highly recommend Select Specialty Hospital to anyone in the situation of needing to place a family member there or being a patient at Select themselves, without any hesitation whatsoever. If I needed to do it all over again with my dad, or another family member, I would most definitely give Select Specialty Hospital that opportunity again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Select Specialty Hospital ~ Danielle N. Gill, daughter of David “Dobber” Dobbs - Room 341"
"I have a friend who's husband was involved in a tragic accident with many broken bones, and on a ventilator while recovering. He was transferred to select after almost losing hope for a normal recovery. Within a very short time, he was off the ventilator and home walking and talking with family just in time for the holidays. We are so thankful for the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists at select specialty hospital for their never ending care and support. Thank you all for all you do for our community! Highly recommend to anyone experiencing a similar situation."
