"I started taking dance lessons at Espacio Flamenco in September of 2022 after a lapse of 25 years. There are many different classes offered to find your comfort level and to progress in different directions- in a positive atmosphere where mutual respect is encouraged. The studio includes accomplished guitarists and singers, and Spanish language is often heard. Students are invited to studio parties with food and live music. There are regular costumed student performances for those who wish to join in. Staff perform regularly at local venues; world class flamenco performers are brought to Portland for performances and occasionally for master classes. Regarding the holiday party December, 2022: Congratulations to Espacio Flamenco on putting on such a great party! I'd never been to a big flamenco music and food feast. I love that in Spain small children are typically included in flamenco family gatherings, and I saw an elderly lady hop up and dance spontaneously on the sidelines. Maybe a little more wine and she would have been in the middle. My companion stretched himself and sang along with the carols, even though he's a rock and roll guy, and we both met people it was fun to talk to. He might even become a dance convert- I actually got him on the dance floor for the first time ever at a banquet this last winter. Looking forward to putting in more time as a flamenco student, and knowing this well enough to be spontaneous. The music is inside already. Regarding the spring, 2023 78-student recital: It was very inspiring (and fun!) to see all the more advanced dancers perform on Sunday, electrifying actually. And it felt victorious for the 8 of us in Tangos de Triana- we were exultant! The feeling of power and connection of being one of 8 pairs of flamenco shoes on stage in thunderous unison is like no other. Brenna McDonald, the Espacio Flamenco Music Director, spreads so much happiness by sharing her enthusiasm, creativity, interpersonal and organizational skills. Those things rarely show up in the same person. I really am in awe, in no small part because I know so many artists of different kinds who in their lifetimes, never were able to create a successful business doing what they loved."
