"School is good for focused kids who start early in kindergarten or otherwise have good french language skills. Singapore math method is excellent. Unfortunately, school is very poorly funded. Teachers lack teaching credentials and experience and have a difficult time keeping all students engaged. Disengaged kids wander around the classroom being ignored. School lacks diversity. Facilities lack playgrounds, etc., which many kids need to burn off energy. High test scores partly due to self-selection. Focus is on getting rid of under performing kids, rather than helping them succeed. Parents considering school should demand to meet teachers and observe classes before enrolling!"
"My son who is going into 5th grade asked to write a review. This is what he has to say. "The teachers are very understanding and nice. We go to parks sometimes and it's very fun at the end of the year. I really liked M. Yann, Madam Kate, Madam Genevieve and Madam Molly. The end of year voodoo donuts are good.""
"I have a son in 4th grade at this school. He is fluent in French already. Nobody else in the family speaks French. And this is a public school!! They also have Mandarin classes. A few times a year they have class trips to theaters and museums. They visited a French class and a basketball game at PSU. They plan a trip to Paris at the end of the 8th grade. The staff and the parents are phenomenal. I have 2 other school age children and have experience with 8 other public schools. Le Monde is the best!"
"As a parent of a current student in Cris' class at Le Monde French Immersion, I could not disagree more with the negative posters remarks. I am beyond thrilled the instruction my son has and is receiving, not only academically but socially as well. My son feels supported and encouraged each and every day and I must say, I wish he could continue with Cris throughout his entire elementary experience. The school as a whole is growing and changing and improving year by year. Beyond the French language acquisition, my son receives many things at Le Monde that he wouldn't receive at our neighborhood school. We are very happy with our choice. As with any new venture, there are hiccups along the way but if you are not expecting that when you enter your name in the lottery for a new Charter school you probably should re-think your submission. I have faith that as the school grows it will be right up there with the top public schools in Portland!"
"I've worked closely with the teacher mentioned in the negative review. I'm the teacher/parent math liaison at the school and I have found teacher Cris to be a supportive teacher. Even if a single student in his class is struggling in math, Cris ensures that the student gets the support s/he needs, knowing that developing a strong number sense is crucial in the K years for success in math. "Portland Parent", if you want to start an online petition, shouldn't you reveal your identity?"
