Clatsop County Historical Society
About the Business
The Clatsop County Historical Society is located at 714 Exchange Street in Astoria, Oregon. The society is housed in the historic Flavel House, which was built in 1884-85 for Captain George Flavel and his family. This Queen Anne style house is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the Northwest and holds local and national significance.
The Flavel House has been restored to showcase the Victorian period's elegance and the history of the Flavel family. Visitors can begin their self-guided tours at the Flavel Carriage House Visitor's Center, which opens at 10:00 AM. The museum features 11,600 square feet of space, including public rooms on the first floor, bedchambers on the second floor, and a large attic area.
The house is adorned with Eastlake-influenced woodwork, imported tiles, hand-carved mantels, and a variety of decorative elements typical of the Queen Anne architectural style. The property also includes a Carriage House, which now serves as the Visitor Center and administrative offices for the Clatsop County Historical Society.
The Flavel House rests on park-like grounds covering an entire city block and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1951. Visitors can explore the house's rich history, architectural details, and beautiful gardens during their visit. Safety measures, including regular cleaning of high-touch areas and the availability of hand sanitizer, are in place to ensure a safe experience for all guests.

"Lovely little gift shop and museum inside. There's a penny smashing machine for you to make your own souvenir. This is the place where you buy your Flavel House Tour tickets. There's also a short film that you can watch before your tour. Very friendly and helpful staff to answer all of your questions. :-)"
