The site includes the historic West Wing building, which was part of the original college campus.

After merging with Centenary College at Brandon Springs, Mississippi, the institution became known as Centenary College of Louisiana and was operated by the Methodist/Episcopal Church South. The campus flourished before the Civil War, but was greatly impacted by the conflict and subsequent low enrollment.

Following the war, Centenary College relocated to Shreveport, leaving behind the West Wing and a professor's house at the original site. In 1979, the Centenary State Historic Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its significance.
