Reviews of Dixie Cafe at Houmas House and Gardens
"Went for a work lunch with a large group, since the buffet is an easy choice. The food was pretty solid, not a ton of options, but a decent variety (not for vegetarian folks have to say!) The staff was super accommodating so I don't want to knock their service, they were fantastic. The room itself is beautiful but it is SO LOUD. Like, I could barely carry a conversation with the person next to me loud. It was honestly just a lot. I don't think I'd go back unless I was there touring the property (and didn't want to splurge for the fancier restaurant). The grounds are stunning, and there's a lot to do on site, I do want to go back and see the rest."
"Absolutely stunning property. Atmosphere, service and food were all wonderful. A small walk over bridge and you'll be overlooking a beautiful lake. Houmas House, Houmas Museum and Dixie Cafe are definitely worth the visit."
"Very tasty food. Nice view of the gardens. We visited after touring the museum and gardens."
"Fantastic hidden restaurant surrounded by lush tropical landscaping - this restaurant never disappoints! The Sunday brunch is all-you-can-eat and is a great value. The drinks are strong, cool and delicious. Make sure you stop in at the nearby Turtle Bar which is only a few feet from the entrance to this restaurant. It's one of the most interesting and unique small bars you will ever pop into in the Baton Rouge - New Orleans areas. If you do find yourself eating at Cafe Burnside or grabbing a delicious cocktail at the Turtle Bar, I assure you that you'll be smitten and continue coming here no matter where you're from our how long your drive is. Guaranteed!"
"5/15/21 I came here for the first time. My date and I had reservations for 7 P.M. When we got to the hostess, she informed us that there were no tables available, yet. (Okay, no big deal.) When we were asked to be seated at the ENORMOUS table, to be seated side-by-side, when we were not walk-ins seemed to be bit odd of an offer; however, maybe we would have preferred it...so it is fine that she asked. Not everyone can internalize reseravtions made would suggest that the people wanted an intimate seating area at their own table. Once we were seated in an area apart from the wide-opened portion of the restaurant, we were able to enjoy a more quiet and reserved spot for our repast. Our waiter started out fine, but he neglected us hugely later on in the dining: I had already cued him that I would need more tea (they do not have tall glasses...only gobblets). At the end of our meal, he decided to bring a pitcher of tea for us. The food that I ate: the gumbo and pumpkin bisque was tasty. None of these items I would return for, though. My date's shrimp po-boy was nothing spectacular for that $$$$. There was too much dijon or creole mustard used. The lasagna was not that good, either. It IS a VERY BEAUTIFUL RESTAURANT, but it is not worth the hype. One and DONE!"
