"My six-year-old went to ER from urgent care. The urgent care physician ran blood tests and found high WBC with fever and no other symptoms, except a wound on the ankle that looked infected. He tested negative for COVID and influenza. The urgent care physician was concerned about sepsis and clearly stated that in his notes and advised us to go to ER asap. The ER doc did not read the notes, and swabbed for Strep. We asked if she read the urgent care notes and she said she would in a little bit. When she came back to tell us strep was negative and she was sending us home because he just has the starting of "something", we asked again if she read the urgent care notes. She went to the computer to read notes and bashed the urgent care physician for taking blood tests stating she didn't know why they would do that and they did it wrong. She said if they were concerned about sepsis they needed to do a certain test. She proceeded to tell us that two inflammation levers were elevated and that she would do the specific tests that are used to diagnose sepsis. The test results came back and we were able to see it in MyCharts before she came back. The results indicated a very high probability of sepsis. The doc came back and said the results were fine and she would give us antibiotics and send us home. We proceeded to tell her we saw the results on MyCharts which indicated that sepsis was likely to which she said "Well, those tests haven't really been tested on children". Huh????? Based on the looks we gave her she told us she would have the floor physician come down and take a look. Dr. Warren then comes back and says the floor physician is coming down and they are on the fence about a spinal tap (first we heard about that). The floor physician did a thorough review and said "I agree with Dr. Warren that he needs to be admitted to the hospital, but I think we need to give him antibiotics thru his IV and watch how he responds before we consider a spinal tap. Are you okay with that?" We say absolutely, that's exactly what we wanted, but Dr. Warren tried to send him home twice, not admit him and she just mentioned a spinal tap, which we did not ask for or want unless he doesn't respond. In the end, he was admitted into intensive care, but why didn't Dr. Warren want to admit him? Obviously, she puts zero weight on urgent care opinion (I've seen this multiple times in other settings), so much so that she didn't care to even look at the notes. When she did finally review and did her own testing to reveal exactly what urgent care was concerned about, she STILL tried to send him home when the tests indicated it was highly likely he had sepsis. State Insurance? Ego because everything she said to us was incorrect? Did she meet her maximum number of admits for the month so did it start impacting her bonus? In any event, a 6-year-old child's life was on the line which is far more important than any of the above reasons so please eat a piece of humble pie Dr. Warren. As an FYI, my young mom was sent home from the ER because it was just the start of "something" and when she returned to the ER she never made it out because, by that time, she was in septic shock."
