During the Revolutionary War, the farm played a significant role as American army officers used it as a headquarters. General Enoch Poor and General Benedict Arnold were said to have been quartered at the farm during this time. The farm was left in near-ruins after the battles, but John and Lydia returned to restore it and raise their family of eight children.
