Yates Mill building, located at 4630 Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a museum showcasing a fully restored, circa-1756 gristmill. This historic mill is the centerpiece of Historic Yates Mill County Park and is the only fully restored, operational automatic mill in North Carolina. Privately owned for centuries, the mill was last used in the 1950s before falling into neglect. However, thanks to the efforts of Yates Mill Associates, a non-profit organization formed in 1989, the mill was restored and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
Yates Mill Associates works tirelessly to maintain the mill and has developed a public/private partnership with North Carolina State University and Wake County Parks to develop the surrounding land into a nature park. The park, known as Historic Yates Mill County Park, offers visitors a chance to explore the history of the mill and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
In order to continue preserving this important piece of history, Yates Mill Associates will be launching a Capital Fundraising Campaign in Fall 2023 to raise funds for much-needed repairs to the waterwheel, flume, and other exterior parts of the mill. Donations and memberships to Yates Mill Associates are tax-deductible, and support from the community is essential to keeping the mill in operation. "Nice trail around a lake as well as a mill. The waterfall from the lake can be walked up to and can walk in the creek. Nice stop to take in this historic landmark."
"It was beautiful and peaceful. Full of greenery and the cold breeze from the waterfall makes us stay there a little longer. There are two routes available to Mill, one with a lengthy Trail of 1 mile and another with 0.1 mile."
"They have scheduled tours of the mill and a small museum adorned w/ wildlife near the parking lot. It's also a good place to bring your kids for a hike. There's a path that goes all around the pond and yet another path that goes back into the woods (using the bridge from the parking lot)."
"Lovely stroll around the lake with a number of observation areas. The Mill in particular was incredibly charming. The lake can not be seen from the bottom of the mill, which makes it look as if there is a mini waterfall. This is in fact the lake that flows over the wall across the rocks. This was a smaller park but definitely worth the visit and is a good local getaway very close to downtown."
