Reviews of Major Andre Monument
"Worth visiting if you are a history buff. Eat at the Old 76 House then drive up to the Andre monument. It is in a residential area with no parking."
"Unique memorial that reminds us of the stories history of the region. I just happened upon it. Would not recommend coming out of your way unless you’re a revolutionary war nut."
"Interesting spot to visit. Ignore the uninformed posting below. Andre was not a traitor he was a British officer on a mission. He was captured not by continental soldiers but some locals out prowling around. The hanging in Turn bore not the slightest resemblance to the actual events which were far more interesting."
"This is the execution site of Major John André, the most famous spy of the Revolution. His final days began with a chance encounter in Tarrytown where he was intercepted by three Continental soldiers he mistook for British soldiers and ended on this hill where he was hung by the neck to die. Today, the site is in the middle of a circle that splits a residential road and is memorialized with a cenotaph. Andre's final words are rumored to be: "Bear me witness that I bear my fate like a brave man.""
"The engraved text is a little difficult to read but it’s worth a visit if you appreciate Revolutionary War history (or you’ve seen the AMC show “Turn: Washington’s Spies” in which Maj. John André is a main character. The show is on Netflix as of 2021) The monument is in the middle of a residential street, sort of like the middle of a small traffic circle — you can park along the road but be sure not to block any driveways. If visiting André’s monument, be sure to also visit the nearby Washington’s Headquarters at the DeWint House and grab a meal at the Old ‘76 House, both right around the corner from this memorial in historic Tappan, NY."
