Reviews of Newport Academy
"After reviewing different options we came across Newport Academy. A campus away from the busy life, so someone can focus on themselves. The counselors and support they provide are excellent. They were able to help our teenager become recentered. After completing the program you are able to see the positive impact the Academy has had on him. We greatly appreciate all the staff for always being available to answer questions and assisting along the process."
"I so badly wanted to say such great things about this program. The truth is that they have NO IDEA what they are doing. They need to learn how to COMMUNICATE much better. I am not a parent. I do not have kids of my own but I took guardianship of my 16 year old cousin. I sent him here to hopefully have him find some kind of stability and possible mental health issues diagnosed and resources to help him cope in a better way after losing his parents. He was depressed, using self harm, anxiety and overall mood disorders that were not yet diagnosed. There are things that Newport did right. They gave good coping skills and things he could use daily. The over interaction helped him become more social but, they also did things that I find to be wrong. Me and my husband were nothing but supportive in helping him find his own path and gender identity the school went behind our back and started giving out treatment options such as “ hormonal therapy paper work, gender identity work books, razors and cotton to stuff areas of the body” NONE of this was ran through me or my husband. You would think a program that is based off Trust would give the parents the opportunity to create those trust bonding experiences. We had no idea he was being sent home with a shaver after he was found doing Self harm while in our care. This created MUCH WORSE problems for the child as he came back and felt he could “ Do what he wanted because Newport told him he could express himself and no matter what we said. He felt that we didn’t need to know his personal business” While trying to have conversations and build trust all that was taken away because Newport Counselors / directors felt that they were the “ much needed parent” for the child to make those decisions while he was in their care and did not discuss those things to the ACTUAL parents/ guardians that have to try to fix their mess. This caused us to be shut out completely! He came back worse then when we sent him in. This caused him to turn to lying more, talking back and as far as getting trouble with police. I don’t blame Newport for all of this, because he did exhibit troubling behavior before but this program definitely did not help. I talked with Nina the clinical director and while she was apologic and took the advice I gave her. If your child is having gender issues I would most definitely NOT send them here. Nina admitted this is new and they don’t really know how to handle it. Now on to other issues. I have yet to see any claims filed for these services through my insurance. I was told that I was guaranteed 30 days. They still had him in their care going on 30 days and I had to call and get upset because no one told me when he was getting out. Mind you we live in Utah and would need to buy plane tickets and time off work to get him. My insurance told me after 30 days nothing would be covered because pre/cert was denied for anything longer. Newport knows this. They are not stupid this something a lot of medical facilities do and blame on insurance. My insurance was up front and transparent with me that anything after 30 days would be my responsibility out of pocket. After having to get upset with Newport they finally “scholarshiped” him for 2 weeks I was able to get things figured out for pick up. Also I was suppose to have FULL on help with getting him into a lower level of care coming back to Utah. This was a complete nightmare. The insurance denied it and while Newport continued to tell me it was all the lower levels cares fault and my insurance fault it was in fact not. Newport used PHP care to get him into “inpatient” treatment and they KNEW that my insurance would deny PHP and that he would only be eligible for IOP when he came out but they did not tell me that! You would think that Newport would have found me something else?!? Nope after multiple conversations with Leia she said I’ll send some options over and never heard back. There is ZERO communication between all aspects of this company. From drop off to pick up two star experience."
"Newport Academy delivered across the board! They were responsive, caring, professional, focused on the root cause(s) - below the surface for growth and healing. The team our son had was amazing - they care for their clients and provided so many resources during his stay and after his stay. Our son learned healthy, meaningful skills while there, that he continues to practice at home. We can’t thank the staff/his team there, enough - you were great, helpful, genuine and comprehensive. And we appreciate the Alumni resources - Alumni meetings, the parent meetings, sibling meetings, Book Clubs, etc. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10 out of 10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️"
"My 70 something days I spent at Newport were really amazing and helped me with a lot of underlying trauma that was fueling my substance abuse. While I was there I made meaningful relationships with the other guys there while the staff was always there and willing to help in any situation! which was really helpful on those darker days of early recovery. Personally, the most beneficial thing that I got the most out of was the family therapy. I can actually talk to my mom now which is sick, before my stay at Newport we couldn’t even look at each other but now we actually have a healthy mother-son relationship."
"This facility has a system that works. My family has learned so much and continues to grow with the skills and tools learned from Newport Academy. My child would have been lost without them. The staff is very good. Aftercare is important and Newport also offers that."
